Chapter Nine- The Reason

1050 Words
Drake Johnson (POV) Holding her hand felt so right, then when we both got caught up staring at each other, I felt the bond connect and fall into place. At least for me. As a human, I have no idea what she is feeling. I know that Cole is driving me nuts with wanting to grab, mate, and mark her right then and there. It is taking all my strength and control to stop him. “You know, Lari, you can tell Carl we appreciate all he has done, but now with the insurance, we no longer need his help with the medical bills.” My father said. “Carl?” I asked. Now was a good time to get some information on this jackass. Her mother looked over at me and answered, “Carl. Lari’s fiancée. He has been really good with paying the medical bills. Without his help, we don’t know where we could have gotten all that money.” I felt Laria stiffen next to me yet smile at her parents, “I will let him know.” “Have you two set a wedding date yet?” Her mother Carla asked. “We haven’t decided on a date yet.” She said, looking down at her food. I can tell she was feeling quite uncomfortable about this change in topic. “Well now with everything going our way, maybe you two should discuss it.” Her mother persisted, unaware of her daughter’s discomfort. “After all you have been engaged since the beginning of Janes’s treatments. That was almost three years ago.” Now it seems to be falling into place. Carl is holding the funds paid out for Larisa’s younger sister Jane’s cancer treatment. Now I understand. Maybe if we somehow can help her pay it all off, he will release her from the engagement. “Carl is such a sweet young man.” Her mother continued. She then turned toward me, “Carl is Lari’s fiancée. He has helped so much, and we are thankful to him. I really love that young man. He is so good to Lari.” Laria stayed silent as her mother talked. It seems Carl has her family fooled into thinking he is a great guy when in reality he is abusing their daughter. I just sat there and smiled while listening to all the good this man had done like he was some sort of god or something. It was ruffling Cole’s fur. He hates Carl and so do I. Laria is my mate, not his. But because these kind folks are human, I have to bide my time. My plan is to get on their good side and indiscreetly expose Carl for who he is. ‘Yes, expose that bastard.’ Cole says all for that plan. ‘I intend to, Cole. Just be patient,’ I know asking my wolf to be patient is a lot to ask, but without proof, we cannot say anything cruel about Carl…just yet. After dinner, Carla set down the plates for dessert. Chocolate cake. “I hope you like homemade chocolate cake?” She asked. I can see where Laria got her looks from. Her mother is beautiful for a woman of her age. With light streaks of gray through her hair that is the same color as Laria’s. And the same soft brown eyes. Where Jane and her father have ash-blond hair and green hazel eyes. I feel comfortable with this family. It makes me miss my dad. He died on a holiday in a rogue attack. That was when I had to step up as Alpha. I have been looking for my mate since. Now that I have found her, I am not letting her go. She will make the perfect Luna for the pack. I know my mom will do a great job of teaching Laria how to be a Luna. My mom is great that way. “I love chocolate cake,” I said, smiling at Carla. After dinner and dessert, we sat around and decided to play some cards. Jane was tired and excused herself going up to her room. So it was just the four of us. An hour into the game, Laria’s phone went off. She looked down at her screen and froze. “Excuse me. I need to take this call,” She said, getting up and walking into the other room. With my wolf hearing, I can hear the conversation between her and the jackass. “Are you home?” Asked Carl. “No. I am at my parent’s house. My sister just got out of the hospital and my mom invited me over to celebrate her homecoming.” “What the hell? When I left, I told you only go to work and back home. No place else,” He sounded angry. “I…I am sorry. This was important to my family.” She tried to explain. “I don’t give a damn. I want you home right now. I will call you back in an hour and you had best be at home. And be sure to have it spotless.” He demanded before I heard a click of him hanging up. I heard Laria sigh, as she walked into the dining room. “I am sorry guys. I have to go. I forgot some things I have to do.” I stood up and asked, “Do you need a ride? I can drop you off?” “No.” She shook her head. “No need. I can take a taxi. You stay and enjoy yourself.” “None since. I can drop you off. I should be going to. I have paperwork I need to finish.” I then looked at Peter, “I will see you Monday at nine. I really look forward to seeing what you bring to the table.” “I will be there with bells on,” Peter said, shaking my hand. I really do like this man. He is going to do wonders at the company. Carla gave me a hug and thanked me for stopping by. Then Laria and I walked out and over to my car. I helped her in and get into the driver’s seat and started the car.
