Chapter 2 Growing Up: Hammond POV

415 Words
Through the years, I taught both Eira and Brant all I knew about magic and fighting. They were both exceptional with the sword. Eira's magic increased to astounding measures. Her healing blue magic was gentle and gave a cooling effect. I taught Brant my protection magic, telling my son that it would be his job to protect Eira one day. I noticed as the two got older, they grew closer together, and it pleased me. Eira's inquisitive and sweet nature with Brant's strong courage and conviction made a good match. I knew my son was capable of taking care of the last Child of Magic. I smiled at the thought that she may not be the last, and someday my give me grandchildren... But I would never tell them that. It was also a month until her 18th birthday and I knew they would both be leaving me soon. As much as I would miss them both, I had a promise to keep. One evening at the camp fire I called them over. "Eira, Brant, come sit my be," I beckoned them. "What's the matter, Hammond?" asked Eira. I sighed, not sure how to say this. "It is almost time, Eira." "Almost time?" her deep blue eyes sparkled in confusion. "Yes, I must send you and Brant away. You are almost 18, and I promised by your 18th birthday you would be prepared to go on your quest to defeat the wind monster," I answered. Eira swallowed hard and looked a little shaken. Brant took her hand in his and threaded her fingers with his. "We will be okay, Eira. We have been training for this our whole lives. You are amazing and strong. And if you ever don't feel like you can do it, just lean on me and I will protect you, and remind you how wonderful you are," he spoke these words softly to her, but I heard every word and smiled. Eira blushed and gave Brant a hug. "Thank you, Brant. I really needed that," she whispered and kissed him on the cheek. Yes, they will make an excellent match, I thought. "Before you take off on the first of many adventures, I'm sure, I need to test the strength of your magic," I said. "What kind of test?" asked Eira. I smiled. "I can't tell you. Just be ready to leave at first light." Eira looked over at Brant. He gave a shrug. I chuckled, "Good night, you two." *****
