Garrett stood up, giving my son a warm high-five. "Thanks, buddy." I grabbed my basket of strawberries, took Orson’s small hand into mine, and led them up the porch steps. Thankfully Willa is currently out at the village market and will not be back for at least another hour. Garrett stepped through the door behind us and stopped near the entryway, his eyes scanning the room in silence. I saw a sudden flash of deep, agonizing pain pass through his eyes. "I'll go put these strawberries in the kitchen," I said coldly, not looking at him. "Orson, stay in the living room." My hands were shaking so hard I could barely turn on the tap water.
