Chapter 2

916 Words
I looked at the man with whom I had shared five years of my life, and his face had become utterly alien to me. Beside him, Chloe still wept, tugging at his sleeve, demanding he answer for her. Dominic only watched me coldly. Those wolf-eyes that had once held such devotion now held nothing but irritation. "Seraphina." "Apologize to Chloe." He bit out each word like a command. The pressure of his Alpha aura rolled down upon me. "Otherwise." "I cannot promise this Luna's seat of yours will remain firm beneath you." The man who had once taken thirty lashes of the silver whip for me,who had wagered tens of billions before every wolf pack in the Alliance for me,who had set fireworks of moonlight burning across the sky for me through an entire night, who had even christened a yacht with my name, that Dominic seemed truly to have vanished. The man who had once flown in the world's finest healers for a paper-thin scrape on my hand, simply to coax a smile from me,that man had died somewhere along the long road of years. I felt myself yanked, brutally, back into the cold present. I understood, at last. The vows had been a joke from the start. While Dominic stood there utterly certain that I would c***k and submit for the sake of my Luna title and my pampered life, I drew out a folder of documents I had prepared in advance, and laid it on the table. It was an advance declaration to the Lycan Council, requesting the dissolution of our Mate Bond. "Since you've made your choice." I looked into Dominic's stunned face. Inside me, my wolf-soul, Inner, gave a contemptuous huff. "Then mine is this." I glanced at Chloe,half-hidden behind Dominic, ecstatic, and let a thin, mocking curve lift my mouth. "Sign it." "Dominic." I drew out a fountain pen and offered it to him. "Let's end this." Bewilderment rippled across his face. He had clearly not expected me to be this swift. Before he could speak, Chloe snatched the pen from my hand, her voice gloating. "Well, since you know your place." "All the better." She thrust the pen into Dominic's stiff fingers. "She's signed. Sign yours, hurry up." "The moment you sign, our child becomes your rightful heir. We hold our bonding ceremony, and the baby and I,we'll have our names secured." "Dominic." When Dominic remained frozen, Chloe shoved at him in irritation. Then, with practiced ease, she dissolved into tears. "You don't want to give me and the baby a name, is that it?" She wept and stabbed her finger at me. "You still can't let go of this filthy little Rogue, can you?" "Every stupid thing you did for her in those days, every one of them is a punchline in every other pack's mouth, Dominic! You said it was over between you." "Seraphina…" Dominic suddenly shoved Chloe off him. The force was startling — she stumbled, struck the corner of the table, and went down hard onto the floor. A shard of broken porcelain sliced open her palm. Blood welled from the cut, and the smell of it pulled Dominic's brow into a tight knot. The wolf in him moved by instinct,to lift up the woman carrying his offspring. But Chloe clutched at the front of his shirt with stubborn fury, demanding he sign. Even now, bleeding on the floor, she would not stop using injury as a blade. "I will not have my child be a bastard!" "I will not have my baby born without a name!" I stood and watched her rage. I watched Dominic waver. And then I watched him decide. He turned, and met my eyes. "Seraphina." "Don't regret this." He swept Chloe up against him and stalked away. As they passed, I saw Chloe lean her cheek against his shoulder and shoot me a silent, sneering smile. The room emptied. Only the housekeeper and I remained. "Luna." "Why must you put yourself through this? Just bow your head a little. Alpha Dominic is still moved by the old days." I looked at the wreckage on the floor. I looked at the trail of Chloe's blood. I looked down at my own ankle, the blood there already crusted dark. I met the housekeeper's worried eyes and only smiled. "I'm fine." I drew out my phone. The screen was already drowning in fresh headlines. Dominic and Chloe had taken over the trending lists of every werewolf forum, the bright red HOT banner pinned beside their names. I tapped one of the videos. There was Dominic, sitting in a hospital VIP suite, gently spooning a herbal infusion to Chloe's lips. The caption read: The Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack at Last Falls for a Woman of True Breeding,His Rogue-Born First Wife Cast Aside. I tapped another. It was Chloe nestled into Dominic's chest, knitting tiny shoes for the unborn pup, her face a study in honeyed delight. "What name shall we give the baby?" "Do you want a boy, or a girl?" Dominic was smiling at her with such impossible tenderness, as though he wanted to lay the whole world at her feet. "A girl, I think." He gazed down at her, eyes warm. "With your noble blood. That alone would be enough." The caption read: A Perfect Alpha Family, the Union of Two Great Houses Is the Only True Rule. I had only just closed the page when a private message from Chloe slid in. Her tone was already drunk on victory.
