Chapter 9: Darkness and Gunfire
The gunshot echoed through the hospital.
For a split second, nobody moved.
Then chaos erupted.
People screamed.
Doctors shouted.
Somewhere down the corridor, glass shattered.
Emergency alarms blared through the darkness.
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
The sudden blackout had plunged the entire floor into darkness, leaving only the faint red glow of emergency lights flickering overhead.
"Get down!" someone shouted.
Strong hands grabbed Elena's arm.
Before she could react, Adrian pulled her behind the hospital bed.
Another gunshot rang out.
Closer this time.
Much closer.
The sound echoed through the hallway.
The security guards immediately drew their weapons.
Richard Kane cursed under his breath.
"What the hell is happening?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Victor.
This had Victor written all over it.
The timing was too perfect.
Someone accessed Jonathan Carter's research files.
The power failed.
Then gunshots.
None of that was a coincidence.
The hospital room suddenly felt very small.
Very exposed.
Adrian's breathing had become heavier.
The effort of moving had clearly affected him.
Even so, he refused to let go of Elena's arm.
She noticed.
And strangely, she didn't pull away.
The realization annoyed her.
She was supposed to hate this man.
Yet every time danger appeared, he seemed more concerned about her than himself.
The thought made her uncomfortable.
Another gunshot exploded outside.
A security guard returned fire.
The sound was deafening inside the enclosed space.
Then came shouting.
Running footsteps.
More alarms.
The entire hospital seemed to be descending into madness.
A moment later, the door burst open.
Everyone tensed.
Weapons immediately pointed toward the entrance.
But it wasn't an attacker.
It was another security officer.
Blood covered one side of his uniform.
His face had gone pale.
"They're on this floor."
The room froze.
Richard stared at him.
"How many?"
"We don't know."
The guard struggled for breath.
"They knew exactly where to go."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Someone helped them."
The conclusion was immediate.
And terrifying.
Because he was probably right.
This wasn't random.
The attackers knew the hospital layout.
They knew where the research files were.
And they knew exactly where Adrian Kane was being treated.
Someone inside the hospital had betrayed them.
The thought sent a chill through Elena.
How many people could she trust now?
The answer seemed to be shrinking by the minute.
A nurse suddenly appeared at the doorway.
Terrified.
"Mr. Kane, we need to move you."
Adrian didn't argue.
For once.
That alone showed how serious the situation had become.
The security team immediately surrounded them.
"There's a secure wing downstairs."
Richard nodded.
"Take us there."
The group moved quickly.
Doctors.
Guards.
Nurses.
Adrian.
Elena.
The moment they entered the hallway, Elena understood just how bad things had become.
People were running everywhere.
Patients were being evacuated.
Emergency lights flashed overhead.
The hospital no longer felt like a hospital.
It felt like a battlefield.
They reached the stairwell.
Then everything stopped.
A body lay across the floor.
One of the security guards.
Motionless.
Elena's stomach twisted.
The sight wasn't graphic, but it was enough.
Someone had gotten here first.
The realization hit everyone simultaneously.
They weren't escaping.
They were being hunted.
The lead guard immediately raised his weapon.
"Back."
Nobody argued.
The group retreated.
Fast.
The stairwell was compromised.
The elevators were offline.
And somewhere inside the building, armed men were searching for them.
Things were rapidly becoming impossible.
Then Adrian suddenly stopped walking.
His eyes fixed on something down the corridor.
Elena followed his gaze.
At first she saw nothing.
Then a figure stepped into view.
A man wearing a dark suit.
Tall.
Calm.
Completely alone.
He wasn't carrying a weapon.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't hiding.
He simply stood there.
Watching.
The emergency lights cast long shadows across the corridor.
And despite the distance, Elena recognized him immediately.
Victor Hayes.
A cold wave passed through her body.
After all the stories.
After all the warnings.
After everything she'd heard.
She was finally seeing him in person.
He looked ordinary.
That was the frightening part.
No scars.
No sinister appearance.
No obvious signs of danger.
Just a well-dressed man in his fifties.
The kind of person you could pass on the street without noticing.
Yet every person around her immediately tensed.
Even Adrian.
Victor smiled.
Not widely.
Just enough.
"Hello, Adrian."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Victor's gaze shifted toward Elena.
For the briefest moment, something flashed in his eyes.
Relief.
As if he'd finally found something he'd been searching for.
"There you are."
Elena felt her pulse spike.
The words weren't directed at Adrian.
They were directed at her.
Victor took a step forward.
The security guards immediately raised their weapons.
He ignored them.
Completely.
"Seven years."
His voice remained calm.
Almost gentle.
"I've spent seven years looking for you."
The statement sent a chill through Elena.
Seven years.
The exact amount of time since her father's disappearance.
That wasn't a coincidence.
Nothing about this was.
Adrian stepped in front of her.
Protective.
Instinctive.
Victor noticed.
His smile faded slightly.
"You always were stubborn."
Adrian's voice turned cold.
"What do you want?"
Victor looked directly at Elena.
And answered without hesitation.
"The same thing Jonathan wanted."
The hallway became silent.
Elena's heart pounded.
"What did my father want?"
Victor's expression softened.
Almost sadly.
Then he said the last thing she expected.
"He wanted to save the world."
The words hung in the air.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
And for the first time since this nightmare began...
Elena wasn't sure which side was telling the truth.
