Chapter 11: What Jonathan Left Behind
The hallway went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody blinked.
Victor's words seemed to echo endlessly inside Elena's head.
"He hid it inside you."
For a moment, she genuinely thought she had misheard him.
Inside her?
What was that supposed to mean?
A file?
Research?
A cure?
The idea sounded ridiculous.
"No."
Elena shook her head.
"No, that's impossible."
Victor remained calm.
Almost annoyingly calm.
"Your father was a very intelligent man."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Stop talking."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Why? Because she deserves the truth?"
The tension between them became unbearable.
Elena could almost feel years of resentment hanging in the air.
Whatever had happened between these men, it had destroyed everything.
Friendships.
Careers.
Lives.
Maybe even her family.
"What does he mean?" Elena demanded.
This time she wasn't asking Victor.
She was asking Adrian.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he finally spoke.
"Jonathan believed your body was unique."
The words hit her like ice water.
"What?"
Richard Kane closed his eyes.
Clearly, he already knew where this conversation was heading.
Years ago, your father discovered something unusual in your genetic profile."
Elena felt dizzy.
The hospital lights flickered again overhead.
For a second, the entire corridor seemed unstable.
"So my father experimented on me?"
The accusation came out harsher than intended.
"No."
Adrian answered immediately.
"Never."
The certainty in his voice surprised her.
"He would never do that."
The conviction sounded personal.
As if Adrian knew Jonathan Carter far better than she ever realized.
"Then what happened?"
Adrian took a slow breath.
"Your father discovered a natural genetic mutation."
The hallway became silent.
"A mutation?"
Adrian nodded.
"Extremely rare."
Victor folded his arms.
"Rare enough that we never found another person like her."
Elena stared at them.
This was insane.
Completely insane.
Yet nobody looked like they were joking.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody corrected the story.
Which meant they all believed it.
The realization made her stomach tighten.
"You're saying there's something different about me."
"Yes."
The answer came from both men at the same time.
For once, they agreed.
And somehow that made it worse.
Elena suddenly remembered something.
Her blood.
The hospital tests.
The doctors' reactions.
The panic.
The whispers.
The impossible match.
A cold feeling crawled through her chest.
"What does my blood have to do with Adrian?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Victor quietly said,
"Everything."
The single word sent a chill down her spine.
The corridor became silent again.
Before Elena could ask another question, a loud c***k echoed through the building.
Everyone looked up.
The ceiling trembled.
Dust drifted downward.
The earlier explosion had damaged more of the hospital than they realized.
"We need to leave."
One of the security guards sounded nervous.
Very nervous.
For once, nobody argued.
The building was no longer safe.
Not with armed men inside.
Not with explosions damaging entire sections.
And definitely not with Victor Hayes standing in the middle of a hallway discussing secrets that powerful people had killed to protect.
The group moved quickly.
Security guards formed a protective circle around Elena.
The gesture didn't go unnoticed.
Not a single guard positioned themselves around Adrian.
All of them focused on her.
That terrified her more than the gunshots.
Because it meant they had already decided who the most important person was.
And it wasn't the billionaire.
It was her.
The realization followed her all the way to the emergency stairwell.
Halfway down the stairs, Adrian suddenly slowed.
Elena noticed immediately.
His breathing had become heavier.
His face had lost color again.
The illness was getting worse.
Far worse.
For a moment, nobody else seemed to notice.
Everyone was too focused on escaping.
But Elena saw it.
She wasn't sure why.
Maybe because she'd worked in hospitals for two years.
Maybe because she'd spent the entire night watching him deteriorate.
Either way, she saw it.
And despite herself, she stopped walking.
"Adrian."
He looked up.
"You okay?"
The question escaped before she could stop it.
Surprise flickered across his face.
Not because of the question.
Because she was the one asking it.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian gave a faint smile.
The first genuine smile she'd ever seen from him.
"Not really."
The honesty caught her off guard.
Before she could respond, another alarm suddenly erupted throughout the stairwell.
This one was different.
Sharper.
Urgent.
A security officer immediately checked his phone.
His face went pale.
"What happened?" Richard asked.
The guard looked up.
His expression was grim.
"They found the surveillance archives."
The group froze.
"What archives?"
"The ones from seven years ago."
Nobody spoke.
Not Adrian.
Not Richard.
Not even Victor.
Because everyone understood the significance.
Seven years ago.
The night Jonathan Carter disappeared.
The night everything began.
The guard swallowed hard.
"We recovered part of the footage."
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
Footage.
Actual footage.
Not stories.
Not theories.
Evidence.
Real evidence.
For the first time all night, hope appeared.
If the footage existed, then maybe the truth existed too.
Maybe she could finally learn what happened to her father.
"What does it show?"
The security officer hesitated.
Then looked directly at Elena.
His face had gone completely white.
And suddenly she knew she wasn't going to like the answer.
"It shows Jonathan Carter."
The stairwell became silent.
Elena stopped breathing.
The guard continued.
"And he wasn't alone."
Her pulse thundered in her ears.
"Who was with him?"
Nobody spoke.
Then the guard slowly answered.
"The person with him was..."
He looked toward Adrian.
Then toward Victor.
Then back at Elena.
"...you."
