CHAPTER SIX
"Mom! I'm back." Anika said, slamming the door.
"Anny is that you?" Her mom called out from the kitchen.
"Yes mom." She went to the kitchen where she saw her mom making dinner.
Her mother turned and smiled at Anika who tried her best to force a smile also. She was tired and she didn't know why. It wasn't like she did anything hectic.
"How was school? Hope you made friends today and had fun? You are coping right?" Her mom was curious but Anika didn't know where to start answering from.
"Yes mom, school was fun and I made a friend today. Her name is Belle and she's a pretty nice girl. Like, actually pretty and nice. I'm sure you'll like her when you see her. And yes I'm coping with the school's procedures." She still forced that smile.
"Alright it seems you had fun and that's sound good to hear, her mom said turned back to the meal she was making feeling proud.
"Mom, what are you doing? Should I assist?" she asked.
"No need to worry, I can take care of this. Just go and have your shower then you come down for dinner. Your dad would be back by dinner time."
"Alright mom."
Anika ran upstairs to her room, got undressed then went under the shower.
As the cold water touched her skin, goose bumps filled her body and surprisingly, she felt refreshed. That was the only place where her thought could run freely without interruption.
She began to reminisce on what had happened that day. It was an interesting day but it was bothersome. From her stepping into that noisy class, to when she got into bus that brought her home was as if she was living a drama.
What bothered her the most was the way Vincent held her. It wasn't a usual friendship hug.
What had gotten over him?
She thought as she turned off the shower. She had had a really long shower, this she noticed from the slight shivers she had begun to feel. It was mid-September and the cool breeze of winter announced its arrival.
She got into her night wear. And as she made to go out of her room, her mind moved her to do something she hadn't done for a long time. She strolled to her bedside drawer and brought out her long used diary. The dust on it told the tale.
Since the incidence of today kept bothering her, she decided to write it down. And that she did.
She wrote and wrote and wrote.
Her worries, plans and confusions she penned down. Once she was done, she felt as little peace in her as she lay in bed looking at the ceiling.
Time to go down for dinner, she stood up and headed downstairs.
*. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *.
Vincent couldn't sleep no matter how he tried. He just kept on rolling on his bed. He hadn't had dinner. He had claimed he wasn't hungry when Drake offered. He just went straight to bed and the war started within him. No matter how hard he closed his eyes sleep wouldn't come. He kept on remembering what he did.
Well, he wasn't feeling guilty. He didn't see it as a big deal, but he was feeling bad, as regards to what Anika would think of him.
He gave up trying. He rose and went downstairs to the kitchen. The thought of everything had made his throat suddenly go dry.
As he got to the kitchen entrance, he almost bumped into Drake, who looked at him with surprise in his eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Vincent asked, though he did not care and did not wait for a response as he bypassed Drake.
"I should be the one asking that what are you doing still awake at this time of the night?" Drake questioned back with concern.
"None of your business." Vincent replied, grabbing a glass and filling it with water.
"Vincent can you not be rude? I just asked out of concern."
Vincent couldn't answer because there was water in his mouth.
"Well don't forget that if there's anything bothering you, you can confide in me. Good night." Drake said and left the kitchen.
When Vincent was done drinking water, without giving what Drake said a second thought, he left the kitchen and headed upstairs to his room where he lay in bed staring at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to come.
When it didn't, without thinking, Vincent stood and walked to his window then peeped through it to Anika's.
He wasn't surprised when he saw it closed.
Of course she must have gone to bed.
That's the right thing to do at this time of the night. I think I should try getting some sleep so I can be able to go to her tomorrow and apologize, if need arises. For now, let me go join her in the dream world. Hmmn? Why do I feel like she belongs to me? If she knows the type of person I am, she wouldn't like to have anything to do with me. He thought as he landed on his bed and got ready for sleep.
He closed his eye and many thoughts filled his mind. And in no time he started feeling sleepy.
Finally.
And the last thing he said before dozing off was; "Goodnight Anika. Hoping to see you in my dream." He whispered under his breath as he slept off.
