Chapter 4: The Awakening of the Rogue‎

‎‎The light slowly faded from the cavern walls. The air was now charged with electricity. Smelled like sulfur. Elena stood still, her hand on Tristan's. The blood bond between them felt warm. Her body was on fire. ‎ ‎Inside her mind, the heavy silence that had driven her to despair was gone. The chains that had held her spirit captive shattered into pieces. This was because of Tristan's power mixing with her own. ‎ ‎Her inner wolf didn't just wake up. It surged forward with a roar. For the time, it felt like a part of her soul. Her vision became sharper. She could see every detail in the dim cavern. She could hear the heartbeat of the wolves in the corner, the crackling of the fire, and the rain outside. ‎ ‎The biggest change was her scent. The old submissive mark of the Bloodmoon Pack was gone, replaced by her scent. Dark vanilla, winter frost and a sharp metallic edge. ‎ ‎Tristan didn't let go of her hand. His gray eyes widened slightly as he looked at her. He could feel her awakening power vibrating through their hands. ‎ ‎"Tristan said, his deep voice filled with surprise. He slowly let go of her hand. Stepped back. "The elders of your pack didn't just suppress an omega spirit, Elena. They hid a reservoir." ‎ ‎Elena stumbled a bit as her senses overwhelmed her. She looked down at her palm. Saw that the deep cut was already healing. ‎ ‎"What... What did you do to me?" she asked, her chest heaving as she tried to control her energy. ‎ ‎"I didn't do anything but help ", Tristan said, wiping the blood from his hand. "A blood pact between two betrayed souls acts as a mirror. My power made your spirit remember what it was before they broke you." ‎ ‎Jade stepped forward from the shadows, her jaw slack with surprise. She looked at Elena and Tristan, back at Elena, her eyes tracking the visible waves of golden-silver aura around Elena. ‎ ‎"Commander ", Jade said, her voice filled with respect. "That wasn't a rogue awakening. I've never felt an aura like that from any pack." ‎ ‎The older wolf from the corner spoke up, his voice trembling. "I spent forty years studying the lineages before I was cast out of the Silverthorn Pack. The light... The absolute command over the spirit without a formal pack link... That is the mark of the Sovereign Bloodline." ‎ ‎Elena shook her head, her mind racing. "That's impossible. My family were merchants within the Bloodmoon Pack. We had no titles. No lineage." ‎ ‎"Politics can hide truths, princess ", Tristan said, his expression hardening. "An Alpha council like the Bloodmoons thrives on control. If they discovered that a simple merchant family carried the traits of a bloodline that could overrule their authority, what do you think they would do?" ‎ ‎The realization hit Elena like a physical blow. The cold looks from Alpha Richard. The constant surveillance by Silas throughout her childhood. It hadn't been about her lack of wealth at all. It had been about fear. ‎ ‎"Julian knew," Elena whispered, her voice hardening. "He didn't just reject me for Scarlett's wealth. He rejected me because he knew he could never control a Sovereign mate." ‎ ‎"And that mistake will cost him everything ", Tristan said. He turned to face the room, his presence drawing the eyes of every wolf present. "Jade, gather the scouts. The border patrols will be chaotic tonight after the succession ceremony. I want a sweep of the neutral perimeter." ‎ ‎The next three weeks passed in a blur of exertion and instruction. ‎ ‎The Neutral Zone did not soften for them. The rain eventually turned into a biting, freezing fog. Tristan was a teacher. He did not spare her because of her status. ‎ ‎Every morning before dawn, they stood in a clearing surrounded by rock formations. ‎ ‎"Again ", Tristan ordered, his voice cutting through the morning mist. Elena pushed herself up from the earth, wiping sweat and mud from her forehead. Her muscles screamed in protest. ‎ ‎Tristan let out a short approving nod. "Better. Much better. Dismissed." ‎ ‎The recruits bowed slightly. He headed back toward the main cavern, leaving Elena alone in the clearing with Tristan. She walked over to a stream, scooping the freezing water into her hands to wash her face. ‎ ‎"You're getting better fast ", Tristan said, walking over to stand beside her. He offered her a cloth to dry her skin. ‎ ‎"The pack structure holds a wolf back. It makes them rely on the group of themselves. Here you have to be a complete hunter." ‎ ‎"I have a teacher ", Elena said, taking the cloth. She looked at him, noticing how the morning light highlighted his jawline and the deep, mysterious look in his gray eyes. ‎ ‎Over the weeks, the initial tension between them had turned into a deep unspoken connection. They didn't just train together; they spent hours into the night mapping out the surrounding areas, analyzing the supply lines of the major packs, and discussing how to bring together the different rogue groups hiding in the wilderness. ‎ ‎The blood bond they had shared was still a warm feeling under her skin. It wasn't a forced connection like a fated mate bond; it was a chosen connection that felt like an anchor. ‎ ‎Whenever she felt overwhelmed by what they were trying to build, his presence was a reassuring force that reminded her she wasn't alone. ‎ ‎"We need more than fighters, Tristan ", Elena said, focusing on the maps they had shared. ‎ ‎"Jade’s scouts say the Bloodmoon Pack has finalized its trade deal with the areas. Scarlett's family is moving silver and weapons through the valley. If they secure that route, their alliance will be almost untouchable." ‎ ‎"Then we don't let them secure it ", Tristan said, a fierce look in his eyes. ‎ ‎"The eastern valley runs along the edge of the Neutral Zone. They think the rogues are too disorganized to launch an attack. They think their wealth protects them." ‎ ‎He stepped closer, his voice dropping to an intense tone. ‎ ‎"We are going to take that valley, Elena. We will intercept their shipments, redirect their resources to our people, and show the packs that the Outcast Empire is real. We are a territory, and we demand our share." ‎ ‎Before Elena could respond, the sound of footsteps crashed through the brush. ‎ ‎Jade appeared from the fog, her chest heaving as she ran toward them, her face tight with panic. ‎ ‎"Commander! Elena!" Jade gasped, holding her side as she stopped before them. ‎ ‎"You need to come to the western ridge. Our scouts just intercepted a patrol trying to cross into the neutral border." ‎ ‎Tristan’s hand immediately went to the hilt of his dagger. ‎ ‎"Bloodmoon?" ‎ ‎"Worse ", Jade said, her eyes wide as she looked directly at Elena. ‎ ‎“It’s an envoy from Alpha Julian. And they aren't just patrolling. They’re tracking a defector—someone who escaped the pack house at night with information that could destroy their entire alliance."
