Chapter two: The Alpha Decision

Iris

Mate.

The word echoed through my head long after my wolf whispered it.

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

I stood frozen in Alice's bedroom, staring at Alpha Duncan Blackwood while my heart threatened to burst from my chest.

No.

This had to be some mistake.

Fated mates were rare.

Almost unheard of.

And even if the moon goddess had chosen a mate for me, it wouldn't be him.

The most powerful Alpha in the region.

A man more than twice my age.

yet the pull between us felt undeniable, powerful, dangerous.

For several long seconds, nobody spoke. Then Alice broke the silence.

" Dad?"

The Alpha blinked, and his expression hardened onto something unreadable.

The strange emotion I had seen in his eyes vanished.

" I wasn't aware we had a guest." His deep voice sent an unexpected shiver through me.

Fuck! I hated that my body reacted.

I hated it.

Alice walked forward," her name is iris."

His gaze returned to me, my wolf stirred. Mate.

The word nearly made me choked.

Dunacn jaw tightened, he looked away first.

Thank the moon goddess, I wasnt sure I could survive another second eye contact.

" you should be resting" He told Alice.

" Not collecting strays."

" Dad"

The warning in her voice made me glanced between them.

The Alpha sighed" I didn't mean it that way."

Alice crossed her arms " Good."

To my surprise, Duncan actually looked slightly guilty.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Apparently even the most feared Alpha in the territory wasn't immune to his daughter's moods.

Alice grabbed my wrist and gently pulled me forward.

"Iris was expelled today."

The room went silent.

yeah this should be interesting.

Duncan eyes darkened immediately," Expelled?"

" yeah...by your sister." she said.

The Alpha eyes narrowed, dangerous tension filling the room. " what happened?"

Alice looked at me, I swallowed hard. suddenly every word felt important.

This was my only chance

My future depends on it.

I took a deep breath and explained everything, no hiding anything.

I explained the meetings, unncessary attention, the threats because I refused to give in to her s****l demands and then the expulsion.

By the time I finished speaking, my hands were shaking. The room was colder somehow.

while Duncan stood there perfect still.

so still.

The silence became uncomfortable, and then terrifying.

He spoke finally," leave us."

I blinked, no way I would be alone with this man. so many things could happen. He could pushed me to the wall and f**k the hell out of me.

fuck! what am I thinking? Now am wet.

Alice frowned," what?"

" leave us."

His tone wasn't loud, he didn't need to be. Authority rolled from him naturally like breathing.

Alice looked ready to argue, then she noticed something in her father face and she hesitated.

" Fine "

she pointed at him, " but be nice."

The Alpha actually looked offended, " when am I not?"

"Everyday."

I nearly laughed.

Alice left before any of us could respond.

The door clicked shut, and now we were alone. My anxiety doubled...infact tripled.

Duncan moved towards the window, his broad shoulders were tensed. For a while he simply stared into the darkness outside and then he spoked.

" Did Eunice touch you?"

The question caught me off guard, " only my arm."

His jaw flexed, " what else?"

I hesitated, something about the looks in his eyes made me answer honestly.

" mostly words...you know..."

" words can still cause harm."

I wasnt expecting that response, most powerful people dismissed things like this.

But Duncan didnt.

For the first time all day, I felt truly seen..The alpha finally turned around, his golden eyes met mine.

The strange pull returned immediately, stronger than before.

My breath caught, apparently he felt it too because his expression became guarded. As though he was trying not to react.

" why didn't you report her sooner?"

I laughed bitterly," To who?"

His face darkened, " fair point."

A small smile tugged at my lips and it disappeared quickly.

it wasnt funny.

Nothing of today was funny.

" I worked so hard, " I whispered.

The words escaped before I could stop them.

" I gave everything to that school." my voice cracked.

" I don't have wealthy parent."

I stared at thr floor," school was all I had. "

silence.

Then I heard footsteps, I looked up, Duncan had moved closer...well not to close as I wanted him to be.

" iris." His voice was quieter now, softer. "look at me."

slowly I did, something inside my chest squeezed painfully. For thr first time today, someone Looked genuinely angry on my behalf.

Not at me.

For me.

" you earned your place there." His voice was firm.

" No one gets to take that away from you.".

my eyes burned, I looked away quickly, pretending not to cry.

Duncan pretend not to notice, a getsure I appreciated.

After a moment, be walked toward the door.

" wait."

He paused.

" what's going to happen now?"

Dunacn expression became unreadable again" Now?"

A dangerous smile appeared, " now my sister learns actions have consequences."

Three floors below....

The Atmosphere inside the study felt completely different.

Duncan sat behind his desk, his phone rested in front of him.

Mate.

The realization refused to settle.

Twenty years!!

Twenty years since he lost his Luna.

Twenty years of believing he would never find another.

Then one glance, and everything changed.

His mate, a twenty one year old omega.

His daughter best friend.

Fate clearly enjoying making his life complicated.

His phone rang once, twice...then connected.

"Duncan?"

Eunice sounded annoyed," I was busy."

" you expelled a student ."

silence...and then she laughed.

"That's why you called?"

Duncan eyes darkened," Answer the question."

" yes."

" why?"

she was silent for so long that Duncan wolf mad e a growl.

" Eunice."

His sister immediately recognize the warning,"I had reasons."

" what reasons?"

" academic concerns."

" liar."

The temperature inside the room seemed to drop, Duncan rarely lost his temper....but when he did, entire packs paid attention.

" you expelled iris Rivera."His voice became dangerously calm .

" you abused your authority."

Eunice scoffed, " she's an omega."

The growl that escaped him shooked the room," be very careful."

"Duncan?"

" No...."

He rose from his chair, " I built that academy to protect young wolves. "

" you will not use to satisfy your personal grudges."

silence..Finally he spoke again, " iris Rivera is reinstated immediately."

" Duncan..."

" immediately."

His sister inhaled sharply, " you would choose an omega over your own sister?"

The Alpha's eyes flashed gold.

Family, Interesting choice of words.

Because she had no idea who Iris truly was.

Neither did he.

well not completely, but his wolf knew.

" Im choosing what is right "

The line went dead.

Dunacn lowered his phone slowly, yet his wolf was restless, still demanding, still pulling him toward the room upstairs.

Toward Iris, his mate.

For the first time In twenty years, the great Alpha dunacn blackwood felt completely out fo control.

And that terrified him more than any enemy ever had.
