By the time I rushed over, Arthur was in the middle of a yelling match with the front desk girl.
"Look carefully and figure out who I am!" he demanded.
The girl held her ground perfectly, her tone steady. "Hmm, I see who you are clearly."
Arthur's voice boomed through the lobby. "Then why the hell won't you let me in? I could have you fired before you even blink, you know?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Redmond, but you've already been fired. That's why your information is no longer in the access control system."
Lorelei snapped at her the second she heard that, her voice shrill enough to make ears ring. "What nonsense are you spouting? You're just a random front desk receptionist. How dare you say Mr. Redmond has been fired?"
I stepped forward and gestured for the girl to take a seat. When my gaze landed on Arthur, he actually had the nerve to tattle to me like an aggrieved child.
"Honey, Lorelei and I just got back to the company, and this front desk girl actually said we've been fired. Fire her right now."
"The girl didn't say anything wrong," I said.
He blinked, shocked. "Estelle, what do you mean by that? What gives you the right to fire me?"
I walked out of the company entrance until I stood barely a foot away from him, gazing down at him with a cold, unassailable authority. "Arthur, is that how you talk to the actual boss of this company?"
At that, all the bite went out of Arthur's voice right away. "Estelle, I'm sorry, I was just too hasty. I just want to know what the hell is going on here, alright?"
I folded my arms across my chest and stared him dead in the eye. "What's going on? Exactly what you think is going on."
Arthur's voice shot up again, thick with outrage and indignation. "What about Lorelei then? She beat out tons of competitors to get this job. You're firing her just because you're jealous I took her with me on a business trip? That's ridiculous!"
"Why do you care so much about Lorelai? She's supposed to be only your assistant, right?" My voice turned icy cold in an instant. "Or is it because she's the kind of assistant who gets her boss to buy her sports cars and sleep with her that you're like this?"
That one line tore straight through every last bit of their flimsy cover. The crowd of employees who had gathered to watch erupted into a low buzz of shocked murmurs.
Arthur immediately looked guilty as sin. "Estelle, what are you talking about? That's not true. I bought that car for you, actually. I just let her borrow it temporarily. You can't go around accusing me of things..."
I only offered a short, pointed reminder. "Last night."
Arthur jumped to defend himself right away. "Nothing happened last night! We booked two separate rooms after the business dinner. The shower in my room broke, so I just went to hers to use hers, that's all."
"Hm? Did I say anything about something happening last night?"
He scoffed and tried to dodge me again. "Estelle, is this really necessary? You're firing that poor girl just because you misunderstood the situation? Can you stop being so unreasonable? I'm a married man, what could possibly happen between us—"
"Hah!" I cut him off mid-rant. "Arthur, if the shower in your hotel room breaks, you call the front desk to switch rooms. Whether something happened between you two doesn't depend on what you say. It depends on what you did." I yanked out my phone and pulled up the proof of his infidelity my secretary had sent over. "The very first month I was out of the country, you bought her a luxury apartment right near the office. Every single month after that, you transferred her five figures, plus spent money on luxury goods for her. Then A couple of days ago, you bought her a Porsche, then dragged her off on vacation under the guise of a work trip."
I fixed him with a sharp, icy glare and laid down the law. "Arthur, every last cent you spent on her is marital property, and I have every right to take every penny back! You have three days to get every single one of those assets back, no exceptions. And if you don't? Lorelei will be held legally liable for unlawful enrichment and end up in jail. As for you, since you intentionally hid and transferred marital property during our marriage, get ready to walk away from this marriage with nothing but the shirt on your back."
Arthur still tried to weasel his way out of it. "I didn't give them to her! The apartment and the car, I was just letting her borrow them! And besides, my mother's been dying for us to have a child so she can show him off to all her friends. If we get divorced—"
"She's your mother, not mine." I snorted, completely unbothered. "Go get the paperwork sorted and get the car and apartment back right now. If you keep standing here getting in everyone's way, I won't hesitate to ruin your reputation so thoroughly you'll have nothing left to your name."
The two of them huffed and slunk off, grumbling the whole way.
