Chapter 3

I never thought Arthur would actually take back the house and the car. But what I never saw coming even more was him bringing that woman right to our home. "You took back the house, so Lorelei's got nowhere to stay right now. She'll crash with us for a little while, and move out as soon as she finds a new place," he explained. I stared at him, ice-cold. "Get her out of here in ten minutes." Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heel and headed straight for the study. One look at the mess inside, and blinding, red-hot rage flooded my system so fast my scalp went numb on the spot. Lorelei's clothes were strewn all over the study, taking over every surface. My parents' portrait had fallen to the floor, its frame shattered, and a clear footprint was smudged right across the photo itself. The growth journal my parents had kept for me was soaked through and falling apart. Anger surged straight to the top of my head, and I roared, "Arthur Redmond!" He came sprinting down the hall in a panic. I turned around slowly, my gaze locking on him. "What the hell is this?" He scratched the back of his head, his face twisted with awkwardness. "Lorelei's stuff is just being stored in the study temporarily. When we were moving things in, we probably just accidentally—" "Accidentally?" I lifted a shaking hand and pointed at the bare spot on the wall where the portrait had hung perfectly centered for years. "That portrait was mounted dead center on this wall, nailed tight so it would never move. How the hell does it fall off by accident? Did she do this on purpose, or did you let her?" My eyes bore into him, sharp enough to cut. "Answer me." "I'm sorry, honey. It wasn't on purpose." I rolled my eyes and just pulled the pre-printed divorce papers out of my bag and slammed them hard across his face. "Sign it. Take the woman you brought here, and get the hell out of my house." "Divorce again?" Arthur, ever the arrogant man, scowled. "I see how it is now. You just can't stand Lorelei, can you? She's just a naive young girl, I was only being kind enough to help her out. We never crossed any lines. Why do you have to be so aggressive? Can't you cut her some slack and be more forgiving?" I didn't bother wasting another second listening to his garbage. I pulled out my phone and called the estate security directly. "There are two trespassers in my house. I need you to come remove them, please." "Estelle, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Arthur roared. The security team showed up in no time. I pointed straight at Arthur and Lorelei. "It's these two. Please escort them out," I said, "This is my house!" Arthur thrashed, trying to yank himself free of the security guards' grip, but they held him tight. "The property deed is in my name," I said flatly, not giving him a single inch of face. Then I turned to the guards. "Throw them out." Finally, everything was quiet.
