Jamin gasped for breath, burying his face into his knees to suppress the scream which threatened to erupt in a wail of grief. He watched, helpless, as Ninsianna led the winged demon inside the sky canoe, her hips swaying gently in an invitation.
He lurched towards the cliff, his spear clutched in his fist, and fell back. He wasn't supposed to be here. His father had threatened to drag him before the tribunal if he thwarted his authority one more time. The penalty for disobedience was public humiliation, banishment, or stoning. He would bear humiliation gladly if it would win back Ninsianna's heart, but what if they banished him? If they sent him away, he would never get a chance to show her his plan.
