TRIAL BYMOONLIGHT

The air at Silvercross University was heavier than usual that morning, laden with mist that clung to every surface like a shroud. Ivy Vale awoke with a pounding in her chest that went beyond fear — it was power, raw and untamed, coursing through her veins. She had barely survived the encounter with her mother and the shadow wolves. Her mind raced with questions. Why had her mother changed? Why had the wolf inside her awakened so violently? And what did the Twilight Court truly want from her? Ronan had stayed close through the night, but even his proximity didn’t bring comfort. His amber eyes, dark and molten, betrayed the tension in his mind. He had fought the shadow wolves alongside her, yet there was hesitation — a restraint that Ivy couldn’t ignore. “You need to learn control,” he said, his voice low, almost commanding. “The Court will test you soon, and if you’re unprepared…” His words trailed off, but Ivy understood the threat. The Summoning By noon, Ivy and Ronan were escorted to the East Hall, an ancient stone building that pulsed with magic. The students and faculty of Silvercross had already gathered, forming a circle around a raised platform. At its center burned a shallow pool of moonfire — silver flames that did not consume, yet shimmered with lethal energy. Ivy’s heartbeat quickened. The Twilight Court was not just watching — they were present. Her mother stood at the edge of the platform, eyes violet and unreadable. Ivy could feel the pull of the Court’s power, the weight of centuries pressing down on her. A voice echoed in the chamber: “Ivy Vale, heir of the Moonborn. Step forward and claim your trial.” Her legs trembled, but she moved. The silver light of her awakening reflected off the pool of moonfire, highlighting the metallic streaks in her hair. She could feel her wolf within responding, impatient and hungry. Ronan’s hand brushed against hers. For a moment, he looked almost human, vulnerable. “Stay focused. Trust yourself.” Ivy nodded, though fear churned inside her like a storm. The First Trial A sudden roar split the air, and the moonfire rose higher, forming spectral shapes. Wolves — or something like wolves — emerged, their bodies composed of living shadows. They circled her, eyes violet, teeth bared. “Defeat them,” the voice commanded. Ivy’s hands flared with silver light. She lunged forward instinctively, but the wolves were fast, almost unreal. They struck with precision, testing her every move. Ronan moved beside her, guiding, correcting, and occasionally taking blows she hadn’t seen coming. Ivy realized quickly that he was not only protecting her — he was training her under fire. As the battle continued, Ivy’s senses sharpened. She could feel the heartbeat of every wolf, the rhythm of their attacks, and the subtle shifts in the moonfire’s energy. For the first time, she truly embraced her wolf side, moving with a speed and precision that surprised even herself. But then something unexpected happened: one of the wolves leapt, and its shadow fell across her chest. Ivy felt her energy drain, her silver light dimming. Panic surged. Ronan lunged to her side. “Break the link! Fight it!” he shouted. Ivy realized the wolf was not attacking her physically. It was feeding on doubt, fear, and hesitation — emotions she had never fully controlled. She clenched her fists, heart steadying. The wolf shrieked as her silver aura flared back, stronger than before, and the spectral shape dissipated into smoke. Ivy discovers the first rule of the Twilight Court — the trials are not just tests of strength or skill. They are tests of will, emotion, and identity. Every hesitation, every doubt strengthens the Court’s agents and weakens her. Her awakening is more dangerous than she imagined; one misstep could allow them to consume her entirely. The chamber quieted, but Ivy’s attention was drawn to her mother. Her violet eyes glowed brighter than ever. She smiled — a cruel, knowing smile. “Ivy,” her mother said softly, voice carrying through the hall. “You are awakening… but you still do not understand your power. Nor your destiny.” Ivy’s heart clenched. “Why? Why are you like this? Why did they… why did you?” Her mother’s gaze was unreadable. “Because, child, the Court does not forgive weakness. And they do not forgive love.” Ivy staggered back, and the silver light around her flared again. Something deep inside — the wolf, the Moonborn, the heir — surged. She realized for the first time that her mother had not abandoned her. She had been bound by the Court, forced to serve as both mentor and predator. Ronan’s hand tightened on her shoulder. “Don’t let her manipulate you,” he warned. “Even she is under their control.” The Second Trial The moonfire pulsed violently. Shapes began to form — other students, shadowed and spectral, resembling Ivy’s friends, her teachers, even Astra. They were illusions, created to test her emotional strength. “Ivy Vale,” the voice boomed, “will you choose the path of obedience… or the path of freedom?” Ivy’s wolf howled inside her, instinct screaming for action. She saw illusions of those she loved attacking her, their eyes glowing violet. Her heart raced. She could not let them fall, could not let fear dominate her. She surged forward, silver light erupting from her body, dispelling the illusions one by one. But then she froze. At the far end of the chamber, a figure she did not recognize stepped from the shadows — tall, cloaked, their face hidden beneath a hood. It spoke her name. “Ivy Vale… you are not ready.” Ivy’s body froze. The figure moved with impossible speed, and in one fluid motion, the hood fell back. It was Ronan — but not the Ronan she knew. His eyes were violet, glowing, and his aura radiated the same energy as the Court. Ivy discovers that Ronan has been partially bound to the Court, his loyalty compromised. Some part of him is working for the very forces that could destroy her. She realizes she cannot fully trust anyone, not even the boy she has begun to feel for. Ronan’s voice softened. “Ivy… you must trust yourself. Fight, or they will claim you.” The illusion wolves surged forward again, faster and stronger. Ivy felt fear and rage intertwine, her wolf side fully awakened. Silver light shot from her hands, the moonfire responding to her presence. She leapt into the battle, striking down illusions with precision. But then, the chamber shook violently. The real Court was arriving. Shadows pressed against the walls, whispers echoing with power. Ivy realized with horror that her trials were just beginning — and the real danger had yet to appear. Her mother stepped forward, eyes blazing violet. “Your final choice, Ivy… obey or resist. One path will destroy you. The other… will reshape the Court itself.” Ivy stands in the center of the chamber, surrounded by moonfire, illusions, and shadow wolves. Her mother looms before her, corrupted by the Court. Ronan’s loyalty is uncertain — his eyes glowing violet like the Court’s. Ivy must make a choice: obey, resist, or risk losing herself completely. The true power of the Moonborn heir begins to awaken, but at what cost?
