Chapter 44 - The Call

1193 Words
Athena woke up feeling groggy. Her head was pounding. She felt that this was the worst hangover she'd got. She smiled bitterly. At least, her hangover is numbing the pain in her heart. She was trying to move her right hand to touch her forehead when she felt something was on her hand. She could barely open her eyes because of her headache. She forced herself to look at what was on her hand that she even had to squint his eyes to see. She smirked. It was her phone. It seemed like even in her sleep she was still holding it. She didn’t bother checking the time. She just put her phone beside her and turned her back from it. She feels hungry but she doesn't want to do it plus her head is killing her. She was just too lazy to do anything. Until she just decided to continue sleeping. Fuck you, hunger! I’m sleeping. She was about to close her eyes again when suddenly her phone started to ring. “f**k!” She cursed. She regretted that she wasn’t able to turn off her call. She thought it was Cytherea again. She never fails to contact her every day. Every single damn day. She reached for her phone and canceled the call. But the call was so persistent. “Argh!” She groaned. She’s starting to get annoyed. She kicked her legs constantly like she was a two-year-old toddler who’s having a fit. She looked at the phone screen to see the devil that was trying to disturb her sleep. Her eyes widened when she saw the phone number flashing on the screen. It is Astilbe. Suddenly, her hangover, headache, hunger.. everything was gone. Her anger rose. She can still remember what happened that night and she regretted it the most. If she wasn’t too trusting. What a shameless prick! “What do you want?!” She yelled even before the caller could say, ‘hello’. She immediately got up and sat on the bed. “Athena-“ “You son of a b***h! How could you do that to him? It was never in the plan to kill him. Why?!” She yelled again, cutting him off. Her eyes started to get blurry with tears. The pain in her heart is attacking her again. “It was an accident. I didn’t kill him, Athena,” Astilbe said in a very low voice. She could hear the regret and pain in his voice but she was too angry to even acknowledge those. “Liar! I will make you pay for what you did to him. And why are you even calling me? Do you think I’m still going to help you with Cytherea? No freaking way! The plan is for you to be closer to Cytherea and for me to get Ares that’s why I helped you. But you killed him!” “I-SAID-I-DIDN’T-KILL-HIM, Athena! I didn’t kill him!!” he yelled that Athena almost thought she’s going to be deaf. Her right ear was ringing because of his loud voice. “Don’t you ever accuse me of something that I didn’t do?! I didn’t kill him-“ “I-I saw you…” Athena sobbed and in a stern voice, she added, “I saw you that night. I saw you covered his face. I saw him struggling and I saw him fainted and I saw how you dragged him into the corner…” She whimpered. “You even waved at me when you saw me looking in your direction. I was waiting for you to tell me what your plan is. Why did you have to put him to sleep? I have so many questions and I trust you. But, oh boy, I am so wrong in trusting you because you killed him!" She said in pure anguish as her heart bleeds in pain. She wants to know why Astilbe killed Ares. She saw him for goodness sake! Astilbe's voice became stern and full of hatred when he responded, "As I have told you over and over again, I didn't kill him. You can go ahead and think whatever you want. I don't care anymore. I-DIDN'T-KILL-HIM." Emphasizing every word. "My main concern is Cytherea. She's worried sick about you. I know where you are. If you don't want me to give your location, you better reach out to her." Hearing Cytherea's name angers Athena more. How dare he tell her what to do? "You don't have a right to tell me what to do! Go ahead and tell Cytherea where am I. I don't care! But you, I will find you and you will rot in hell for all the things you did to Ares… that I promise you!" She yelled. Her throat is starting to hurt because of the yelling that she did throughout the phone call. Astilbe chuckled which made Athena furious. She was already clenching her fist and had the urge to throw her phone against the wall. She was controlling herself so hard. If only she can drag Astilbe from the screen of her phone just to hurt him, she probably already did. "If you're too sure that I'm the one who killed him. Go ahead and tell the police. I dare you. You hate me right? Go ahead. Let's go together in jail, remember you saw me yet you did nothing. You see you're in this too. Oh, wait!" Astilbe said like he remembered something. "Maybe that's the reason why you don't want to see Cytherea because somehow it is your fault. You see me yet you did nothing-" "It is because I trusted you! I trusted you! Which I regretted so much now. I thought you're going to help me to be with Ares yet you killed him. You used me. You used me for your happiness yet you took away mine. You're a cruel man, Astilbe. So cruel," she sobbed even more. She can feel that her eyes are swelling more because of crying. The pain of losing the person she loves the most is killing her. "I may have used you, Athena, but just like me, you're a cruel person too. Have you already forgotten that you're also planning to take your best friend's happiness? Did you already forget how many times you have betrayed Cytherea? I didn't kill Ares. He did it to himself. So, believe whatever you want to believe. Go to the police or do whatever you desire to do. But remember, Athena you are not innocent as you pretended to be. You are as evil as me or maybe more. At least in my case, I did everything for Cytherea's happiness. How about you?" Athena didn't respond. She was caught off guard by Astilbe's question. He chuckled. "Yep, thought so," he said after a few minutes of silence. "You are a selfish person, Athena. You only think about your happiness regardless of what the person you call Bestie would feel. I pity you." Athena was about to rebut but the call was already disconnected. She bit her lips. A plan formed in her head. If I can't report you to the authorities then I will put justice in my hands…
