Chapter 7: The Council’s Demands

1234 Words
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat as she followed Lucian and Victor down the corridor. The walls of the mansion felt more oppressive than ever, as though the ancient stone was closing in on her. Every footstep she took echoed louder than the last, and with each step, the weight of her new reality pressed down harder. The council was here. The enforcers had arrived to take her away, and with them, they brought a storm that threatened to destroy everything Lucian had worked to protect. She glanced at Lucian, whose jaw was clenched tightly, his expression hard and unreadable. The Alpha’s usual confidence seemed to have faltered, though he was doing his best to hide it. The tension between them was palpable—he was determined to protect her, but there was an underlying fear in his eyes that she couldn’t ignore. They reached the grand hall, where the council’s delegation waited. Two men stood at the door, both dressed in dark robes that marked their status as high-ranking members of the council. Their eyes were cold, and the air around them crackled with authority. They stood like statues, waiting for Lucian to make his move. Sophia’s pulse quickened. She had never been this close to the council before, and she could feel the oppressive weight of their power in the room. They were not just here to talk; they were here to make decisions that could shatter everything. Lucian stepped forward, his posture straightening as he addressed the two men. “You have no right to come here and demand anything of me,” he said, his voice low and controlled, though there was an edge to it. The man on the left, tall and imposing, with silver streaks in his hair, spoke first. “Alpha Lucian,” he said, his voice cold but laced with authority. “We are not here to negotiate. The council has spoken. The bond between you and the human is a direct violation of our laws, and it must be severed immediately.” Sophia flinched at the word “human,” as if it was something to be discarded. The way they spoke about her, as if she were nothing but an obstacle, a problem to be solved, made her stomach churn. She wasn’t just Lucian’s mate to them—she was a threat. “I will not let you take her,” Lucian replied, his voice more forceful this time. “I won’t allow this madness to tear us apart.” The other man, shorter but no less intimidating, stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Lucian with cold calculation. “You don’t have a choice. The council has made its decision. This bond—this abomination between a human and a werewolf—cannot exist. If you do not comply, we will take matters into our own hands.” Sophia’s heart pounded as she looked between Lucian and the two men. She had seen Lucian fight before—his strength, his power. But the council was a different beast altogether. They had control over everything, over the fate of every werewolf in the world, and they weren’t afraid to use that power to maintain order. “What happens if we refuse?” Lucian asked, his voice dangerous, but his eyes betraying the uncertainty he felt. The council was powerful, but there were limits to what they could do. Or so he hoped. The man with silver hair sneered, his lips curling in disdain. “If you refuse, we will have no choice but to strip you of your title as Alpha and banish you from the pack. You will be nothing, Lucian. A rogue. And your mate… well, she will be dealt with accordingly.” Sophia’s blood ran cold at his words. “Deal with me?” she repeated, barely able to speak. The shorter man nodded. “You’re an anomaly, a threat to the natural order of things. The council doesn’t tolerate such weakness, especially from the Alpha.” Lucian’s fists clenched at his sides, his nails digging into his palms as he fought to keep his composure. “I will not allow you to harm her. You’ll have to kill me first.” A tense silence filled the room. The council members exchanged a look, as though weighing their options. Finally, the man with silver hair spoke again, his voice cold and resolute. “We don’t want to kill you, Lucian. But we will do what we must to preserve the order of the pack. We cannot allow the laws to be broken without consequences. And if you continue to defy the council, you’ll bring down the wrath of every pack member who values our rules.” Sophia could feel the fear creeping into her chest, but she refused to let it show. She couldn’t let them see how much their words affected her. She was no longer just a bystander. She was a part of this world now, for better or worse. “What’s your decision?” the council member asked, his voice dripping with finality. Lucian turned to Sophia, his eyes searching hers. In that moment, everything seemed to slow down. Their bond—the one they hadn’t fully understood yet—was more real than ever. She saw the storm in his eyes, the weight of the choices he had to make. She could feel the tug of fate between them, pulling them together even as everything around them threatened to tear them apart. Finally, Lucian spoke, his voice unwavering. “I refuse to comply with the council. I won’t let you tear us apart. You’ll have to kill me first.” The council members exchanged a glance, and the atmosphere in the room shifted. They had expected resistance, but hearing it from Lucian himself was a declaration of war. For a moment, the tension was unbearable. “Very well,” the man with silver hair said, his voice darkening. “We have given you the chance to comply. But make no mistake, Lucian—this is not over. The council will not be swayed. And the next time we come, we will not be so… diplomatic.” With that, the two men turned and left the room, their footsteps echoing in the distance. The door closed behind them with a heavy thud, leaving Lucian and Sophia standing in the silence. Sophia felt as if she had just been caught in the eye of a storm. Everything was changing so fast. She had no idea what would happen next, but she knew one thing for sure—this wasn’t over. Lucian turned to her, his face softening, though his eyes still burned with intensity. “We’re not giving up. I’ll protect you, no matter what.” Sophia nodded, her heart racing. The council was powerful, but they hadn’t broken her. And they wouldn’t break Lucian either. “Together,” she whispered, meeting his gaze. “We’ll fight this.” Lucian smiled, though it was tinged with sadness. “Together,” he agreed. As the fire crackled in the hearth behind them, the weight of the moment hung heavily in the air. The battle had only just begun, and they were standing at the center of it. The council would come again, but Lucian and Sophia had made a choice—they would fight for each other, no matter the cost.
