Kaelin could still feel the pain of what happened in the packs clearing on her skin. It has been a day. The memory of Lucian staring coldly at her still hurts deeply. She tried hard to move on and forget the humiliation..but her wolf wouldn't let her Every step she took in the forest reminds her that she is no longer the same. The forest felt different. She can feel the wind moving before it even touches her. She could hear the sound of leaves under a squirrel's feet.. She could smell a rabbit from a distance. Every instinct was sharp and demanding.. Her heart was hurting even more. She wishes she could just forget about Lucian and the way he made her feel.. That morning the pack elders had called a meeting. Kaelin knew why even though they did not say it out loud. She could feel it in the way the wolves were moving around her through their whispers and in the tension that made her skin feel funny. Everyone knew about the mate bond now. The bond that should have connected her to Lucian.. Everyone knew that the Alpha had rejected it. As she walked into the clearing the whispers stopped. All eyes turned to her. Kaelin felt her stomach get tight. Her wolf was ready to fight and every muscle was tight. Her claws were out. Lucian was standing in the middle looking at the pack with his eyes. He was calm and perfect. His eyes were cold and distant. "I’m here." Kaelin said softly, her voice barely heard Lucian looked at her his eyes still cold. "Kaelin this pack has needs that are bigger than what you want. I will not claim you as my mate." The words hurt her like a punch. Kaelin froze, her claws digging into the earth. The pack was quiet. She could hear them stop breathing "You can't do that." She whispered. Her voice was shaking. Her wolf growled, low and threatening her ears. Lucian looked at her his eyes not changing. "Not now, maybe never. For the good of the pack." He said Kaelin felt shocked she did not believe what was happening. Her human side felt like screaming, crying and throwing herself at him. Her wolf wanted to fight, to be wild and dangerous. "You can't, " she said again, her voice breaking. "You promised…” Lucian stopped her his voice sharp. "Promises can't come before the safety of the pack. I am the Alpha and my duty is to take care of the pack, not to think about a bond I don't want." The words cut her deep. She felt humiliated. Whispers went through the crowd. Some were mean. Kaelin could feel their eyes on her. They were judging her Her wolf was ready to fight claws out, tail moving teeth sharp.. Her human mind was trying to control it. She thought, I must not lose control, not here, not now.. The power inside her was too much and it was hard to hold back. Lucian took a step closer, his eyes still cold. "You need to step back, you are not stable." Kaelin's wolf roared inside her, muscles tight, heart racing. She wanted to fight to make him see her pain. Her claws were out shining in the light. She could feel the pack getting scared. The pack was tense, younger wolves were scared. The elders were talking quietly. Some were afraid. Some were warning others. Kaelin could feel the fear, the respect and the knowledge of her growing power and many backed away Her wolf was testing her. Kaelin was shaking. She could smell the fear, taste the tension and hear the heartbeat of every wolf around her. “I….” She tried to speak. The words got stuck in her throat. Her claws dug deeper into the earth and her body was shaking with energy. Lucian said, "Kaelin, control yourself." The calm words made her wolf angry. Control? it said. You rejected me, you humiliated me, you did nothing to help me! Kaelin took a breath and tried to calm down. Her eyes shone in the dark; they reflected the light of the torches. Her wolf growled, low and strong and Kaelin realized that she did not just want to control it she wanted to master it. First she had to survive. The elders were worried. "This is not normal, " one of them said. "She is dangerous, " he said. Kaelin could feel their fear. It made her wolf stronger. Lucian's eyes were soft for a moment. Then they went back to being cold. "You are not ready, " he said quietly. Kaelin's wolf was thrashing inside her. It wanted to fight.. She stayed still shaking, sweat on her forehead. She could feel every eye on her, judgmental, fearful, curious.. Through it all she felt something sharp: the embers of her secret love for Lucian, hurt and burning. By the end of the day Kaelin had walked to the edge of the clearing leaning on a tree, her silver eyes shining faintly. The pack had left. She could still hear them talking about her. Her claws dug into the bark of the tree trying to calm down the storm inside her. She had barely survived the humiliation. She had controlled her wolf barely.. The taste of anger of betrayal of loss was still there. Yet something had awakened. A spark of power that she had never felt before. The Silver Wolf, her wolf, had stirred, testing her boundaries calling to her. Somewhere in the forest she felt it, movement, watching, and patience. Not human, not part of the pack. The predator that had been in her dreams, the one that seemed tied to her destiny was waiting. Kaelin stood up, her silver eyes narrow. Her claws were out. Her wolf was growling low. She whispered to herself "I will control this, I will survive, I will rise.. When I face him again he will see me." Kaelin had been rejected by Lucian in front of the pack. Her wolf instincts had surged. The pack was scared. They were keeping their distance. Alone, in the forest the predator was watching her testing her s trength and the Silver Wolf was awakening, which would define her destiny.
