Chapter 2 Despised by Everyone

664 Words
It was winter outside, with heavy snow swirling in the air. Miranda shivered as soon as she stepped out. Beyond the courtyard was a wide road flanked by two identical apartment buildings. These apartments were allocated to military officers stationed here for extended periods. Miranda and Carson were both from Aures. A year ago, Marhorn had erupted into war, prompting the world's leading power, Aures, to send troops for humanitarian aid. Miranda had followed Carson as a military spouse, only to find Marhorn not only war-torn but also remote, impoverished, and harshly cold. As she walked and took in her surroundings, Miranda soon reached the entrance of the neighboring apartment building, where several children were playing in the snow. She casually glanced inside, only to be met with a hostile reaction. A little boy on the ground saw her and scrambled up, shouting, "Everyone, close your doors! That fatty is here to mooch again!" "How rude!" Miranda muttered, feeling offended by the boy's harsh words. But before she could finish her thought, she heard several doors slam shut in the nearby courtyards. Miranda sighed. It wasn't entirely the neighbors' fault for disliking her. The former Miranda had indeed done many reprehensible things. Three years ago, Carson came home to visit his parents and met the former Miranda, who had fallen in love with him at first sight. One night, she snuck into his room, undressed, and slept there. The next day, she accused Carson of molesting her, threatening to call the police unless he married her. To protect Carson's reputation in the military, his parents had no choice but to arrange the marriage. On their wedding night, Carson received a mission and left before they could consummate the marriage. After his mission, Carson's unit was stationed in Marhorn, and Miranda, as his wife, had to follow. The former Miranda was not only lazy but also gluttonous, constantly begging for food from the neighbors. This behavior was tolerable at first, but over time, it became unbearable. Marhorn was a remote area with scarce resources, and food was rationed per household. Many lower-ranked officers' families could barely make ends meet, and her freeloading often left them hungry for days. Carson loathed the former Miranda, and apart from giving her living expenses each month, he paid little attention to her until he learned of her misdeeds six months later. To clean up her mess, Carson withdrew his savings from the bank and went door-to-door, apologizing to the other military families. Given this situation, it was no wonder Carson despised Miranda and had no intention of sleeping with her. He might even harbor thoughts of killing her. Miranda was distraught. She never imagined she would go from being a modern-educated doctor to a reviled figure. She now had to bear the consequences of the original owner's actions after she had ruined basically everything. She even considered jumping from the apartment building to see if she could return to the modern time. But what if she failed? She would lose this second chance at life. Bending down, Miranda scooped up a handful of snow and rubbed it on her face, trying to calm herself. No matter what, she had to cherish this second chance at life and strive to survive in this era. First, she needed to mend her relationship with her husband Carson, the only person she could rely on here. Carson, despite his hatred, was extraordinarily handsome and in his prime. Without a job, friends, or family in this place, if she divorced him, she would have to return to Aures alone, completely empty-handed. But the thought of reconciling with Carson made Miranda feel dejected. That man was probably inside, angrily handling his situation while thinking of ways to dismember her. The former Miranda had committed countless misdeeds and was despised by everyone. But the new Miranda was a woman with progressive thoughts. How would she find a way to turn things around in this hostile environment?
