Chapter 4: Moving in

889 Words
The black car arrived at ten sharp. The driver, a tall man in a dark suit who introduced himself only as Marcus, took Lila’s single suitcase and her heavy camera bag without a word. The drive across the city was quiet, smooth, and brief, ending in the underground garage of a glass-and-steel residential tower downtown. A private elevator took them directly to the top floor. When the doors slid open, Lila stepped straight into Damien’s penthouse. The space was enormous, minimalist, and controlled. High ceilings, dark stone floors, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the skyline. Everything had its place. It felt less like a home and more like an extension of the man who owned it—sleek, expensive, and distant. Damien was standing near the kitchen counter, a cup of dark coffee in his hand. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket today, just a dark charcoal shirt with the top button undone. He looked up as the elevator doors closed behind Marcus, who set her bags down and quietly slipped back into the lift. "Miss Reed," Damien said. His voice carried effortlessly across the open floor. "Mr. Vale," Lila replied softly, setting her handbag on a low side table. "I'll show you to your room." He set his mug down and walked toward the short hallway leading off the main living area. Lila followed a step behind, her low heels clicking against the polished stone. He opened the first door on the right. The bedroom was spacious, bathed in natural light from another wall of glass, featuring a king-sized bed made with crisp dark sheets, a long desk, and a door leading to a private ensuite bathroom. "This is yours," Damien said, standing in the doorway so that she had to brush slightly past him to look inside. "My quarters are through the connecting door at the end of the hall. Yours remains unlocked. Mine stays closed unless I open it." Lila turned to face him, standing in the center of the room. "Understood." "Unpack your things," he said, his dark eyes sweeping over her face, taking in her calm posture and the faint, steady breath moving her chest. "You'll join me in the living area at seven. We'll go over the expectations for your first week." "I'll be ready." He gave a short nod and turned on his heel, leaving her alone. Lila spent the afternoon unpacking. It didn't take long, she had brought only what was practical: high-quality neutral clothing, her photography gear, and a few personal toiletries. By six-thirty, she had showered and changed into a simple, elegant slate-grey knee-length dress. Her dark hair was neatly brushed back, and she wore no jewelry except her simple gold studs. At seven, she stepped out into the living room. The sun was beginning to set over the city, casting long gold and amber light across the dark furniture. Damien was sitting on the large leather sofa, a tumbler of amber liquid in his hand. An tablet rested on the table beside him. "Sit," he said, gesturing toward the armchair opposite him. Lila walked over, but instead of taking the chair, she moved with quiet grace to the edge of the sofa, sitting a respectful distance away from him. Damien’s eyes narrowed slightly at the choice, a faint glint of interest flashing across his unreadable face. He didn't tell her to move. "You're punctual," he noted, his voice low in the quiet room. "I take my commitments seriously," Lila said quietly, folding her hands neatly in her lap. "Good. Because life in this space runs on precision." Damien leaned back against the cushions, turning his head to look at her. "During the day, when I am working in the study, you do not disturb me unless I request a session. When we travel to events, you keep your camera ready, but you do not speak to press or guests unless spoken to." "And while we are here in the penthouse?" she asked, her voice steady, holding his gaze. "While we are here, you are on my time," Damien said. His voice dropped a fraction lower, smooth and absolute. "If I want you in the room while I work, you stay. If I tell you to set the camera down, you set it down." He didn't touch her, but the sheer physical presence of him filled the space between them. Lila could feel the warmth radiating from his body, the faint scent of cedar and dark coffee clinging to him. She didn't retreat. She didn't fidget or look away. A faint, subtle flush rose to her cheeks at his tone, but her expression remained serene, her breathing slow and controlled. "I understand, Damien," she said softly, using his first name for the first time. Damien’s eyes locked onto her lips at the sound of his name, a sudden, heavy stillness settling over him. He tapped one finger against his glass once, twice, then set it down on the table. He didn't move away. He stayed on the couch beside her for another hour, talking through the schedule for the upcoming week, keeping her in his space far longer than necessary. Lila sat beside him, unbothered and composed, fully aware of every inch of distance between them and hyper-aware that from this night on, she was entirely inside his world.
