Chapter 23 : Trial by Fire

558 Words
The training chamber in the palace of Aurelion Kingdom had been transformed. Wooden dummies had been replaced with life-sized armored figures, and the air was thick with tension. Aria stood in the center, her sword in one hand, her other hand glowing faintly with her golden energy. Adrian, Lila, and Alexander watched carefully from the sidelines. “Today,” Adrian said, his voice echoing in the high-ceilinged room, “you will face your first trial—full control of your royal power under combat conditions. If you fail… you may put yourself or others at risk.” Aria’s chest tightened, but she nodded. She was ready. From the shadows, Lila stepped forward. “I’ll attack first. You respond. Let’s see how well you can focus under pressure.” Aria raised her glowing hand. The energy pulsed, warming her veins like a living thing. She felt it responding to her heartbeat, waiting for her command. Lila charged. Swift, precise movements, striking from all directions. Aria blocked with her sword and unleashed bursts of golden energy, sending Lila staggering back. “Good!” Adrian shouted. “Keep control!” Sweat beaded on Aria’s forehead. Her energy flared, brighter, hotter, more intense. With each strike, she felt a connection to her bloodline—an ancient strength flowing through her. But suddenly— A crash came from the palace corridor. Both Aria and the observers froze. Adrian narrowed his eyes. “That’s not part of the trial…” Through the doorway, a shadowy figure slipped inside. Viktor’s spy, moving silently among the palace walls, dagger in hand. Aria’s golden energy flared automatically, a warning signal. She turned toward the intruder, and without thinking, thrust her hand forward. A wave of golden light shot out, hitting the spy and sending him sprawling against the wall. The dagger clattered to the floor. “Excellent control!” Adrian shouted. “You adapted instinctively!” Aria’s chest heaved as she lowered her glowing hand. Her heartbeat slowly returned to normal. Alexander approached her, gently resting a hand on her shoulder. “You’ve come far, Aria. You’re learning to harness what you were born to wield.” Lila smiled, brushing herself off. “I didn’t know she could do that.” Aria felt a surge of pride—but it was fleeting. Outside the palace walls, Viktor’s eyes narrowed. From his vantage point, he had seen the flash of golden light. She’s stronger than I imagined, he murmured. “But she’s not ready… not yet. Soon, she’ll face a choice that will define the kingdom. And I will be waiting.” Inside the palace, Aria looked at her hands, now calm and glowing faintly in the dim light. “I can do this,” she whispered. “I will protect everyone.” Adrian stepped forward, his voice serious. “And now, the real challenge begins. Viktor will not give us another warning. Prepare yourself, Aria. The next attack… will not be just a test.” Her golden energy pulsed like a heartbeat in her hands. She tightened her grip on her sword. Let him come, she thought. I’m ready for whatever he throws at me. The war for the throne was far from over. But for the first time, Aria felt truly powerful, truly ready to fight—not just for her life, but for the kingdom.
