CHAPTER 14Brooms and Goons Monte traipsed toward the rear of the Widow Smith’s property, careful to keep a safe distance between himself and the cottage. He blew warm air into his hands, grateful that he had worn thick boots and his heaviest coat, yet sorry that he had left his gloves behind. Hazy clouds stretched through the sky. They sheltered the light of the moon and stars, casting shadows upon the fields. A row of meticulously trimmed shrubs served as a divider between the Widow’s back garden and the wild field from which Monte trudged.
