"Good evening, little one," came a voice through the darkness.
Kiona's eyes slowly opened, still sore from all the crying earlier. She saw Ariadne perched on the edge of her bed, looking down at her in earnest.
"Ari!" Kiona exclaimed. She sat upright and jumped into Ariadne's lap.
Ariadne held Kiona close to her. Ariadne had heard from her mother what transpired this morning and went to check up on Kiona soon after, but found her fast asleep, her pillow soaked in tears. It was high time she came down now as she hadn't had a bite to eat all day.
"Come on Kio, let's go down to eat something you must be starving," Ariadne cooed.
"No, I don't want to eat anything," Kiona's voice was muffled, as she had smooshed her face against Ariadne's shoulder.
"Oh no, really? Well I'd better tell the cook that you don't want to eat the tacos she has made for you."
Kiona's stomach grumbled loudly as she heard this. Tacos were one of Kiona's favourite foods to eat.
"Tacos? Theres.....tacos for dinner?" Kiona asked, peering round at Ariadne, face still slightly smooshed..
Ariadne smiled and nodded at Kiona eagerly.
"Yes. Tacos."
"Hmmmm...well maybe I'll eat a little bit, just a little bit, so cook doesn't feel bad. Seeing she made such an effort," came the reply.
"Aw Kio, how thoughtful," Ariadne answered, giving her a little kiss on her head. "Freshen up quickly and let's go downstairs."
Kiona did as she was told and gracefully walked downstairs with her older sister. She kept telling herself she was a changed girl now. She must stay out of trouble at all costs. As Ariadne led her into the dining area, they walked over the main table and took a seat with the rest of the family. Kiona walked over to her parents and gave each other them a kiss on the cheek. She then took her usual seat at the table. The rest of the meal took place in a comfortable silence and Kiona didn't say a word. She enjoyed her dinner and looked up only to fill her plate or to sneak a quick glance at her brothers who were doing the same thing. Towards the end of the meal, Bryan, who was sat next to her, passed her a note.
'Meeting in your room after dinner.'
Kiona gave a slight nod and quickly finished her dinner, running upstairs straight after. She sat on her bed, waiting, when there came a knock on her door. Kiona opened the door and stepped aside to let her brothers in. After a few moments of awkward silence, she spoke up.
"So... what's the plan?"
"Well," Bryan started. "We don't want to go to boarding school. We need to prove that we don't need to."
"By behaving ourselves?" Kiona asked.
"We need to do more than that," explained Benjy. "We need to go the extra mile and show them we don't just behave but also take our positions in the pack seriously. If I am to be the next Alpha after Papa, then I need to learn his duties and learn from him. Bryan might become my Beta or Gamma, so he needs to take training seriously too."
Kiona thought about it for a moment and realised what she had to do.
"I'm going to need to learn from Mama and Ari how to be a lady," she sighed. "But I also want to train, Benjy. I don't just want to learn how to cook, clean and be a host. I can be so much more than that."
"There's no reason why you can't train and learn to fight, but you need to take all your lessons seriously and stay out of trouble. You also need to stay away from Brad and Luca for a while," warned Benjy.
"Yeah. You need to also show to Papa and Mama that you are taking your role seriously. I mean, you are still so little but it's better you learn now," added Bryan.
Kiona looked at both of her brothers and realised this was the first serious conversation she had ever had with them. Indeed they were 6-7 years older than her (Benjy was thirteen and Bryan was nearly twelve), and knew more than she did, but in that moment she had never been prouder to have two supportive brothers. She nodded in agreement and they spent the rest of evening putting their plans together. Kiona's action plan was:
1. Stay out of trouble
2. Get up early and go to school
3. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE
4. Warrior Fighter Training
5. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!
6. How to be a Lady Training
7. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!!!!
Benjy and Bryan read Kiona's list and giggled, partly because it was funny and partly because it was very similar to their lists. After agreeing the plan, they dispersed and went to sleep.
-----------
The days that followed saw a transformation in the Wynchwood household, all three children true to their word stuck to the plan and didn't step out of line once, although there were a few close shaves. Kiona had told Bradley and Luca not to trouble her and oddly enough, they complied. The first week was the hardest as old habits die hard and the training was very tough. Every day morning, before after school, they would train, eat their dinner, do their homework and go to sleep. Nonna Maisie was at her wit's end; how can the worst children she has ever managed become the best children she's ever managed? Furthermore, how did this happen seemingly overnight? She knew better than to question it too much or to complain, she just took each day as it came. The good behaviour streak had continued for about a month or so. As the school term was finishing for the summer holidays in a few more weeks, Alpha Felix and Luna Freya sat together one evening in the garden to talk about their children.
"Felix have you noticed anything different about our children of late?" Freya asked him taking a sip from her glass of wine as she stretched her legs out on the grass, sitting on his lap.
"I haven't heard them getting into much trouble recently. In fact I haven't heard a peep from any of the usual suspects. Old Pietr told me he saw them running laps around the track every day these past few weeks and they have been attending junior warrior training," said Felix, thinking out loud.
"Their end of term reports from school are all very good too, Maisie hasn't spoken to me in weeks about anything untoward. Even Kiona refused to have a birthday party last month because she had to study and has been learning to cook. She asked if she could join me in the orphanage and childrens' day centre at the weekend to help out with the pups!"
Freya and Felix looked at each other thoughtfully.
"You don't suppose this is all because we threatened to send them to boarding school?" asked Felix. "I have been so preoccupied with the visiting Alphas and this increasingly serious rogue problem that I haven't even thought about it since."
"Firstly WE didn't threaten them, YOU did and it wasn't a threat, it was a FACT. I wasn't involved in this decision anywhere," explained Freya defensively. "Secondly, yes, I think this is why they have changed."
"Was I a bit too hard on them?"
"Perhaps my love, but it has achieved the right result."
"I was never really going to send them away, you do know that Freya?"
"I didn't but I am not surprised. You wouldn't dare send my pups away from me," Freya said looking up at him winking.
"Never my darling, hell hath no fury like a mother Luna scorned," Felix replied leaning down and pecking her on the lips.
"Damn right! But you do need to tell them you aren't sending them to boarding school anymore," Freya replied, deepening the kiss causing Felix to growl. "I think we better take this upstairs."
Felix impatiently got to his feet pulling his Luna into his arms and led her upstairs to continue where they left off. As they reached their floor in the pack house, a light shone from Kiona's bedroom showing she was still awake. Curious, they knocked on her door and when they heard no reply they opened the door to reveal their little one slumped over her desk drooling over a report of some sort.. Felix scooped her up into his arms and lay her down into bed and tucked her in while Freya tidied up her desk.
"Goodnight little one," they both said, giving her a kiss on her head and retiring for the night.
"Although they don't need to know about the never sending them bit, you do need to tell them they aren't going to boarding school anymore at some stage Felix," Freya reminded as she changed into her nightwear.
"I will my love," Felix replied gently as his eyes turned black with silver flecks. His wolf had now taken over and was admiring his mate's curves.
"I'm serious Felix and Nox whichever one of you I am talking to right now. You must tell them by next week or I will tell them everything!" replied Freya, with her hands on her hips.
"Ok my sweet Luna, I will tell our pups," Felix reassured as he regained control. "Now get over here, so I can punish you for threatening an Alpha."
Freya giggled and obeyed him as she seductively slinked towards the bed.
-----------
During the weeks that followed, both the Alpha and the Luna kept a watchful eye on their pups and noticed what was really going on. The laughter and mischief that once filled the house was replaced with conversations about training and pack business. As adorable as this was in the beginning, the novelty soon wore off and it was when Kiona presented her mother with a report on how to save costs in the pack house management by training some of the older orphans, that finally, alarm bells started ringing in the Luna's head. It was high time that Freya had a chat with Felix. The Luna mind-linked her mate checking he wasn't in a meeting; he confirmed that he wasn't. Freya, without invitation, stormed into his office and slammed the 100-page report on his desk and stared at him.
"How to Cut Costs in Pack House Management & Diversify Pack Member Skills Increasing Their Fulfilment and Employability" Felix muttered and started reading the report under his breath. "This is a great report Frey-Frey, where did you find this?"
The Luna was not impressed and this was completely lost on Felix still, who was scratching his head in wonder.
"Look at the author," she replied calmly.
Felix turned the pages back to the front and saw the letters 'KBS Wynchwood' which he muttered thoughtfully to himself.
"KBS Wynchwood? Is that my great grandfather Frey?" he asked completely confused.
"Think again Buster!" she replied, her anger was on the brink of exploding.
"KBS. KBS Wynchwo," he stopped, and did a double take between the report and Freya.
As a light bulb flicked on in his head, he thought about it and burst out laughing. He kept laughing for a good minute and then as he wiped the tears away from his eyes he noticed his Luna was just as unamused as before.
"What's so funny Alpha?" Freya's voice was dangerously calm now.
"You mean, you're telling me that this report was written by a 6 year old girl?" he replied, wiping the tears of laughter from his eyes.
"You told me you would speak to our pups weeks ago Felix! You forgot and these are the kind of things my babies are spending their childhood on!"
"I should have told them; I'm sorry my love. You have to admit though, it is an excellent report."
"Sorry won't cut it this time mister! You have do it by today or I will sleep in another room excellent report or otherwise!"
Felix's eyes turned black upon hearing this.
"You will not sleep anywhere but by my side you are MINE!"
"I will not listen to another word until you sort this mess out!" Freya declared, and stormed out of the office before Felix could counter.
Felix looked at his baby's report with pride and then felt a little sad for the mess he had created. The growing rogue problem in the neighbouring packs had been taking up a lot of his time that he had forgotten about the threat he made to the children some moons ago. He knew what he had to do.
