"I know this isn't the life you wanted," Alpha continued, his voice still gentle. "I know-I know I pulled you into something dangerous without asking. And I know I've been-" He paused, searching for the word. "-intense. Possessive. Probably suffocating."
"Yes," Annie whispered.
"I'm trying," Alpha said. "To do better. For you. But Annie, I need you to understand something." He took one more step, close enough now that she could feel the warmth radiating off him. "I will never apologise for protecting you. For putting you first. For doing whatever it takes to keep you and our baby safe. That's not something I can change. It's who I am."
