The rain had stopped but its scent still lingered in the air, mixing faintly with the smell of medical equipmens. Morning light was sliding through the tall curtains of the guest room where Annie stayed.
The soft beeping of a monitor filled the room. A transparent bag of fluid hung on a stand beside Annie's gigantic bed. A thin line of the IV drip connected to her vein through a cannula.
Alpha sat by the edge of the bed, his eyes fixed on Elena’s face like he could bring her back to life. He had been there all night since he returned from the council meeting. Onika stood near the foot of the bed, arms folded, her expression neutral but attentive. Adam, Alpha’s right-hand man and head of bodyguards, stood by the door, Dr Owen was quietly packing his medical tools, exhausted but trying to keep his composure.
Then — it happened.
A faint movement. So small, anyone could’ve missed it. The fingers of Annie's left hand twitched against the white sheet, just once.
Onika caught it.
“Did you see that?” she asked.
No one answered.
Then it happened again — this time, stronger. The IV line swayed slightly from her sudden motion.
Alpha rose from his chair, eyes wide now. For a second, the hardened man, the feared Alpha, looked almost soft.
“She’s waking up,” he said quietly — more to himself than to anyone else. His voice carried both relief and fear.
Dr Owen turned fast, tools half-packed, scanning the monitors. “Wait—yes. Her pulse just jumped. She’s responding.”
Adam pushed away from the door, heart hammering in his chest. “She’s really waking up?”
Onika took a cautious step forward, watching as Annie's hand flexed again, her knuckles twitching, a soft sound escaping her lips — a gasp, weak but alive.
“About time,” Onika said.
Alpha’s voice came again.
“She’s back.”
Annie stirred beneath the white sheets. Her eyelashes curled as she blinked against the light, her body aching from everywhere and nowhere at once. Her throat felt dry, her skin clammy.
When her vision finally cleared, she saw them standing over her bed.
Alpha's gaze fixed on her.
Onika.
Dr Owen, was packing away his medical kit.
And Adam.
For a moment, no one spoke. Only the quiet drop of the IV and Annie’s uneven breathing filled the room.
Then, softly — Annie said,
“I… I had the strangest nightmare.”
Her voice cracked softly. They all looked at her, waiting.
She tried to sit, wincing as pain pulled her ribs.
Doctor Owen warned immediately “Miss Annie, I don't think you should get up yet, please stay still.”
Annie heard him but she ignored him, she grunted in pain as she pushed herself upright even though her ribs hurt. She continued.
“There was this wolf… it chased me through the woods. It almost— it almost bit me.”She pauses, eyes staring at Onika.
“But then another wolf came out of nowhere and fought it… It saved me.”
Onika’s expression didn’t change.
Annie frowned, shaking her head as though her memory were betraying her. “You’ll probably think I’m crazy, if I say this but the wolf that saved me … that wolf turned into her.”
She points weakly toward Onika, her fingers trembling.
“I mean… It looked like her. But that can’t be possible.”
The room was quiet.
Then, the Alpha finally spoke — voice calm, “That wasn’t a dream. It was real.”
Annie blinked, confused, she let out a weak laugh. “No, that can’t be possible. I'm telling you, it was a dream.”
“It was real, I saved your life,” Onika added.
Annie stared at her, unable to process the words. “No. That— that’s not possible…”
The Alpha’s voice softened, “Look at your body Annie.”
Her fingers trembled as she pulled back the blanket. She saw her bandaged ribs, bruises crossed her skin — claw marks she hadn’t imagined. The bruises were real. The pain was real.
“No… it can't be”
Alpha sat down and said, “Doctor Owen, Adam, give us the room for a moment.”
Doctor Owen grabbed his bag “Well Alpha there will be no need for me to come back in, my work here is done. She's stable now so I would like to take my leave.” He turned to Annie with a soft smile “You had a rough night. You need rest… no sudden movements and eat light for now. Also, your baby is perfectly fine.”
Annie's hand went to her abdomen, her eyes widened like she just remembered she was pregnant, and she murmured to herself
“My baby”
“Adam, see the doctor off,” the Alpha said.
Adam ushered the doctor out and closed the room behind them.
Inside the room were only Alpha, Annie, and Onika. Alpha turned to Onika.
“show her"
Onika hesitated, “Are you sure?” searching his face for a moment. Alpha nodded in agreement. Without a word, Onika stepped forward and began to undress deliberately as if it were the most normal thing in the world. She unbuttoned her shirt, pulled her pants down, and threw them on the floor. Now naked in front of Alpha and Annie, she threw her hair back.
Annie's eyes widened in shock.
“What are you doing?... Are you… Are you two uhmmm … seriously about to have s*x in front of me?
The Alpha said nothing.
And then it began — Onika's back arched, sharp claws pulled out of her fingertips, her breathing became laboured and her bones cracked, her muscles twisted and turned, she growled. Fur erupts all over her skin and in a moment she is transformed into a massive wolf with glowing eyes.
Annie froze, her hand flew to her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Alpha stepped toward Onika —wolf and ran his hand through her wolf's fur and patted her back slowly the way someone might touch a dangerous thing they trusted completely.
Onika — the wolf — let out a low growl, her tail wagging in approval.
“Do you still believe you are dreaming?” Alpha slowly shifted his eyes from the wolf to Annie waiting for her to answer.
Annie couldn't move, her face flushed with disbelief, and her hands ttrembled.
“Oh my God … it's real”
Alpha replied with a subtle nod.
“She's really a werewolf? Oh my God!... What are you people?” Annie sounded terrified.
The wolf blinked at her, then began to shift again into human form— fur dissolving, bones realigning until Onika stood there once more, human and calm as if nothing had happened. She bent down, picked up her clothes, and dressed swiftly, staring at Annie who still hadn't been able to take her eyes off Onika.
“Yeah, that was very much real.”
When she buttoned the last piece of her shirt, she walked to the door and opened it.
“Adam,” she called.
Adam stepped back inside the room, the click sound of the door shutting followed, his gaze flicking between the Alpha, Onika, and the stunned Annie on the bed. Without asking questions, Adam already knew what had happened while he was gone.
When Alpha had earlier ordered Adam and Dr Owen out, no one had questioned him. They knew better. The reason was not for secrecy. Alpha simply didn’t want them to see Onika naked while she shifted into her wolf form. Her body wasn’t new to him; he’s had her more times than he could remember but her nakedness wasn’t for anyone else’s to see. Not Adam’s. Not the doctor’s.
Annie still looked shaken, sweat ran down her forehead, and the IV line in her hand was trembling slightly from her weak movements.
Alpha went back to his seat, staring at her while she was trying to process what she had just seen. The room was quiet for a moment.
Finally, he spoke, his voice was low and calm
“Annie… what you saw wasn’t a dream. What Onika did was real. We’re not ordinary people.” He paused, watching her reaction. “We’re werewolves.”
Her eyes widened, disbelief painted across her face.
“Werewolves? Oh my God! I need to leave… get me out of here” she screamed.
“Annie, you've been through a lot since last night, I want you to calm down, we'll talk when you feel much better.”
Annie blinked “You really expect me to stay here after hearing all this? You are werewolves! That’s exactly why I have to leave now. You people—” she gestured at Onika, “—you’re dangerous. You’re not even—”
Alpha snapped, his tone sharpened. “You tried running once, and you nearly died in the woods. If Onika hadn’t found you, both you and my child would’ve been torn apart.”
His words replayed in her mind, She thought about the bad wolf’s claws, how it chased her down, the glowing eyes in the dark, the way the bad wolf in the wood lunged at her neck, the sharp pain in her ribs. "Maybe… maybe you are right." she said that trying really hard to convince herself.
Alpha leaned back a little, still staring at her.
“You’ll stay here. Until I say otherwise.”
The firmness in his voice left no room for argument.
But then he asked, quieter this time, “Tell me, Annie… It's still a mystery to me, how you managed to escape from the villa. How did you open the gate?
Annie hesitated, a little confused, her gaze moved toward Adam. Slowly, she lifted her hand and pointed towards Adam.
“He did.”
Adam’s eyes widened. “What?” He stepped forward, genuinely thrown off. “No, I didn’t. I swear I didn’t open that gate.”
“You did!” Annie, sitting more upright now despite the pain in her ribs. “You opened the gate, and you told me to run while I could... You told me it's not safe here, you really wanted me to escape… You did.”
Adam shook his head, baffled. “I would never—ma’am, that's not true, I was never even near the gate.”
Alpha's face was filled with shock, disbelief, and fury at the same time, he quickly turned to Adam.
"Don't lie to me Adam, not you."
Adam fell on his knees still in utter confusion himself
"She's lying Alpha. "
