He started with the data pulled from the signal.
Piran analysed it. Sure, he’d already done that—as had Macklyn’s team—but this time he ran algos to seek any communication with externals, any kind of global input or output.
His routines took their time, and Piran monitored. They got push-back—subtle, but he spotted it in the patterns, in the way the routines’ work-rate ebbed and flowed. He ran checks, found the feedback system. The signal’s code was self-monitoring.
Which meant it was active.
He fed data into his hybrid, let it work its manipulations. Altered the algos so they wouldn’t push so far, would relax at the first indication of resistance, would then alter course.
Piran scanned hits as they came in, ran them through more analysis. Far as he could make
