There was a time when Keelin felt pain like no other. She’d pushed it from her mind, could almost believe it hadn’t happened, but it surfaced every so often like a bad dream, and she’d be back on those operating tables up in Metis.
They altered her lattice—not through the node, but directly, cutting into her and probing beneath her skin. And while they worked, her nerves still sent signals to her brain. She felt everything they did.
