Chapter Two: The Alpha Mate

716 Words
Demetrius POV “I did not believe in fate” “Fate was a human comfort — a fragile lie told to make chaos feel like design, In my world there was only power”, Power decided survival. Power decided loyalty. Power decided who lived long enough to become legend… and who died screaming in the dark. And yet— “I did not move” “That girl stood in the clearing, moonlight draped across her shoulders like something sacred. She should have been trembling. Running. Begging whatever gods humans prayed to for mercy”. “Instead, she watched the shadows. She Watched me” “I stepped forward Branches snapped beneath my boots — a deliberate sound. A warning Still, she didn’t run”. Interesting is all I could think . Demetrius studied her carefully. Her pulse fluttered in her throat — fast, but not panicked. Her breathing shallow, but steady. Fear was there. But it wasn’t winning, “You shouldn’t be here,” I said, my voice low — a sound shaped by both growl and silk. Most humans would have flinched at the inhuman depth of it. She didn’t tho. She only tilted her head slightly. Studying him the same way he studied her. That’s when he noticed it. The absence. No scent of terror. No overwhelming spike of adrenaline. No instinct screaming prey. Instead— There was something… muted. Quiet. Like her soul had learned long ago that screaming changed nothing. Demetrius took another step closer. Up close, she looked even more unreal. Skin pale as frost. Eyes vast and storm-dark. A stillness about her that reminded him not of weakness… But of aftermath. Like a battlefield after the bodies had already fallen. “You can’t speak can you,” he said suddenly no hesitation. It wasn’t a question. Something in her gaze flickered. Surprise. Then resignation. Slowly, she shook her head. No. Silence settled between them again. But this silence was different. It wasn’t empty. It hummed. Demetrius felt it beneath his skin — a strange awareness curling through his chest. The wolf inside him stirred, not with aggression… But recognition. Impossible. He circled her slowly. Predator instinct demanded it. Inspection. Assessment. Claim her or kill her. But neither urge came him. Instead, the closer he got— The stronger the pull became. Something ancient whispered through his blood. Not prey. Not enemy. Not threat. Mine. Demetrius stopped in front of her. Rebekah didn’t step back. Didn’t look away. And that — more than anything — was dangerous. “Do you know what I am?” he asked quietly. A pause. Then— She nodded. Yes. A strange tension filled his chest. Most humans named him monster. Some called him devil. A few whispered his title with reverence. Alpha. But she looked at him as though he were simply… Seen. Not feared. Not worshipped. Seen. Rebekah lifted her hand slowly. Carefully. As if approaching a wounded animal. Demetrius stilled. Every instinct screamed at him to stop her. No one touched an Alpha without permission. No one lived if they tried. Yet— He didn’t move. Her fingers hovered near his arm. Close enough that he could feel the warmth of her skin. Close enough to destroy her. Instead— She touched him. The moment her hand met his skin— Pain exploded through his chest. Not physical. Something deeper. A violent rush of memory that wasn’t his. Screams. Blood. A child’s terror swallowed by the dark. Rebekah gasped silently, her hand jerking back as if burned. Demetrius stumbled half a step, his fangs flashing instinctively. Their eyes locked again. Both of them shaken. Both of them understanding something without words. This was not chance. This was not curiosity. This was a bond neither of them had chosen. And bonds… Were dangerous. Deep in the forest, a howl split the night. Then another. And another. Demetrius’ expression hardened instantly. The pack. They had felt it too. The shift. The connection. And they would not welcome it. Because monsters could rule. Monsters could conquer. But monsters were never meant to love. Demetrius looked back at Rebekah. For the first time in centuries— He hesitated. Then he spoke the words that would change both their fates. “Run”
