Chapter 4.0

The next day, I stepped off the school bus holding a bowl of Filipino dessert I saved from the party. I held the plates together as I walked through the crowded space. I glanced down at it, trying my best not to eat any yet before lunch to have my friends try it.

"Hey Des," I say as I sat next to her in English class.

"Hi ya!" She says as she pulls out her books and places it in front of herself

"How was that party you went to?" Des asked

"It was great! I brought back some little cakes for y'all to try from it" I say holding up the plate "I brought a lot luckily, it is soooo good!"

"Oooh, whats that?" Preston, a classmate I've known since elementary school, asked as I showed Des.

"This is Mamon, it's a Filipino desert" I answer

"Can I try?" He asks

"Just one" I say and let him get one, quickly placing the plate back over it so no one asks anymore.

"mmm, these are good" He says

"They're kinda like moist cupcakes but without the icing" I say "Although they had these Turon, which is fried banana thing"

"Mmm, based on these I would probably guess that they are" Preston says as he leaves to his assigned seat despite other people sitting wherever.

Halfway through the class, the teacher receives a call from the office calling down to the front. I come through the door to see a police officer.

"I was called to the office?" I questioned looking at the officer

"Yes, there's some people who wish to talk to you" One of the respionist said as she guides us to a small open office "You can talk in here if you wish"

"Thank you" The officer ask as a man in a suit comes and sits with his face towards the door and the officer sits next to him.

"Ms. Rivera, I hope we're not disturbing your lessons but we wanted to ask you a couple of questions real quick" the man in the suit says

"Okay," I say taking a seat slowly

"So, we would like to ask you a couple of questions" the suit guy says "Do you know anything that's going on at home?"

"No, everything is fine at home" I say

"Has anything strange ever happened there?" the suit guy asks

"We'll at one point one of my mom's boyfriend's were growing a tomato plant in the house, at least that's what they said but I didn't see any tomatoes" I say listening carefully to what they were asking "But my mom hasn't been home in a couple of months"

"Ah, do you know where her or say your older sister stays?"

"No, not really. Most of the time I'm home with my grandma, my sister and my nephew," I answer

"Okay, one more question. Do you feel safe at home?" they ask

"I mean it's my home, why wouldn't I feel safe?" I ask

"fair question" the suit guy laughs "Thank you, your free to go if we have any other questions we'll be in touch"

"Oh I do got to say though, there has been a lot of copes showing up at home and that has been uncomfortable" I say pretending not to know why

"Oh" The suit guy says and straightening his tie. I leave the office as I pull my shirt away from my neck. I sigh reminding myself to call my sister later tonight. I shake my head as I get into class.

"What was that about?" Des ask as everyone is getting ready for the change of class

"I'm not quite sure," I say shrugging my shoulders as I put my books back into my bag.

A couple hours later, I arrive after school as Mel and Zoe was playing outside. "Hey, come play with us?" Zoe asks

"I will after I put my bag down!" I say as I run inside to say Hi to Mammy and check on Brantley.

"Hi Mammy" I say as I pick Brantley up as I went through the front door. I quickly change Brantley's diaper and get food for Mammy and some Mac and cheese for Brantely "Can I barrow your phone real quick?"

Mammy hands me her phone as I walk out of the room towards Trinity's room and quickly call her.

"Hello?" Trinity's voice fills the air

"Hey, there's been cops and all that showing up at the house. They've even showed up to my school. I don't know if they've showed up to Zoe's but you know how she is" I say

"Okay, I'll come get Brantley later today and keep him with me" She answers as we get off the phone. I let out a sigh. I go out of the room as Mammy asks me to help bring to big metal basing to my room filled with warm water.

"Will you help me give Daddy-daddy a spongebath?" She ask and I nod "And do the tube feeding?"

"Yea" I say as I ring out the rag.
