......... ............. ...........
“She's not supposed to know yet.”
The whisper disappeared into the darkness.
For one terrifying second, neither Damon nor I moved.
Then Damon pushed me behind him.
“Stay here.”
“Damon—”
“Don't move.”
There was something in his voice that made me obey.
He stepped toward the kitchen.
I watched his silhouette disappear around the doorway.
A second later, I heard a crash.
Then silence.
“Damon?”
No answer.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
I should have stayed where he told me.
Instead, I grabbed my phone and followed him.
The kitchen was empty.
The back door stood wide open.
The curtains moved in the cold night air.
And Damon was gone.
I rushed toward the door.
“Damon!”
Something caught my attention.
A small black object lay on the floor beside the table.
I bent down and picked it up.
A key.
Not an ordinary key.
It had a strange silver symbol engraved on it.
A serpent wrapped around a skull.
The same symbol I'd seen on Damon's jacket.
I turned it over.
There were two words engraved on the back.
BLACK REAPERS.
My stomach tightened.
Why would someone breaking into my house have a Black Reapers key?
Footsteps sounded behind me.
I spun around.
Damon stood in the doorway.
His expression was terrifying.
“Where did you get that?”
I held up the key.
“This was on the floor.”
He stared at it.
For the first time since I'd met him, Damon looked genuinely shaken.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Lena.”
“Don't call me that.”
“Give me the key.”
“What is it?”
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who was in my house?”
“Someone who shouldn't have been here.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“It’s the only one you're getting.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You show up at midnight claiming my father was murdered. You tell me you killed him. You break into my house with a gun, and now you're refusing to explain why someone carrying your club's symbol was hiding in my kitchen?”
Damon's jaw tightened.
“You don't understand what you're involved in.”
“Then explain it to me!”
His eyes locked onto mine.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the moment you know everything, they'll stop threatening you.”
I frowned.
“They'll kill me.”
He didn't respond.
That was answer enough.
I swallowed.
“Who are they?”
Damon stepped closer.
“The people who killed your father.”
My breath caught.
“You said you killed him.”
“I lied.”
The words hit harder than I expected, and at this point I was confused.
“Why?”
“Because I needed to know how much you already knew.”
I stared at him.
“So everything you've told me tonight was a lie?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Not everything.”
Before I could ask what that meant, headlights swept across the kitchen window.
Damon immediately turned toward the sound.
His entire posture changed.
“Get down.”
“What?”
“NOW.”
He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the window.
A loud crack split the silence.
The kitchen window shattered.
I screamed.
Damon pushed me to the floor and covered me.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then he lifted his head.
His eyes met mine.
“They found you.”
My voice trembled.
“Who?”
Damon looked toward the broken window.
Then back at me.
“The people your father was running from.”
He reached for his phone.
“We're leaving.”
“To where?”
“Somewhere they can't reach you.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
His eyes hardened.
“You don't have a choice anymore.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
Damon leaned closer.
“Because the moment that window shattered…”
He glanced at the key still clutched in my hand.
“…they stopped trying to scare you.”
His voice dropped suddenly.
“They've decided..
you're worth killing.”his voice sounding so hard.
