THE DEMON OF LAKE COMO The silence within the subterranean catacombs was suffocating, broken only by the dripping of water from the stone cave ceiling and the ragged, heavy breathing of Dante Moretti. He stood tall behind a veil of gunpowder smoke, like a demon who had just crawled up from the deepest pits of hell. Enemy blood stained his black shirt, which was torn at the shoulder, yet his gaze—obsidian orbs, cold and untouchable—was locked firmly onto Count Lorenzo. Alessia stood frozen on the wooden pier. Her heart hammered so violently that her chest felt constricted. Her face, splattered with the blood of a fallen guard, was deathly pale. Dante was alive. A strange, intense wave of relief suddenly stung her soul, burning away the numbness that had paralyzed her moments before. "DDante..." Alessia whispered hoarsely, her voice drowned out by the maddening tension gripping the room. "You... how is it possible that you survived?!" Count Lorenzo hissed. The silverhaired old man took a step back, his fingers gripping the head of his gold cane tightly. The mask of composure he had worn for so long shattered, replaced by raw paranoia. "My men surrounded your study!" "Your men?" Dante chuckled—a low, broken baritone sound, raspy and devoid of any humor. A lethal smirk carved onto his lips as he stepped forward with the relaxed rhythm of a predator. "Their corpses are rotting in the hall upstairs, Lorenzo. You sent sheep to slaughter a wolf." The three remaining guards quickly positioned themselves, aiming their automatic weapons straight at Dante’s chest. "Kill him! Kill him right now!" Lorenzo shrieked in a highpitched, panicked tone. B A N G ! B A N G ! Dante didn’t wait for the enemy’s first shot. The trained reflexes of the Capo worked at a speed almost impossible for the naked eye to follow. Before the nearest guard could pull the trigger, Dante had moved to the side, aimed the largecaliber Desert Eagle in his right hand, and fired straight into the man's chest. The guard’s body was flung backward, hitting the stone wall before collapsing lifelessly into the dark waters of Lake Como. The second guard attempted to spray Dante with an assault rifle, but Dante used a nearby stone pillar as cover while sliding across the slick pier floor. In one fluid, brutal motion, Dante grabbed the guard’s wrist and twisted it until the gruesome sound of snapping bone echoed through the cave. CRACK! The guard’s scream of pain was cut short as Dante seized the weapon and fired a pointblank shot right under his chin. In just a matter of seconds, the underground catacomb had turned into a slaughterhouse. Lorenzo’s last guard tried to grab Alessia to use as a hostage, but Alessia—seizing her chance—used all her strength to elbow the man in the stomach and kick his legs out from behind him. The guard staggered, and that brief opening was more than enough for Dante. BANG! A single bullet pierced the last guard’s forehead, causing him to collapse instantly at Alessia’s feet. Now, in the stone cave smelling of blood and thick gunpowder smoke, only Count Lorenzo remained, trembling beside the door to the wooden pier, with Dante approaching him, his pistol still drawn. Alessia held her breath, leaning her back against the cold cave wall. She stared at Dante with a mixture of profound awe and fear. The man before her was no longer merely human; he was the embodiment of darkness and absolute, unshakable dominance. "WWait, Dante!" Count Lorenzo exclaimed, raising his trembling hands and letting his gold cane fall with a clatter onto the stone floor. "We can talk! You want the Southern territories, don't you?! I can give them to you! The Valenti bloodline... that girl... she belongs to both of us! We can divide the power of the Valenti clan!" Dante stopped a few centimeters in front of Lorenzo. His towering height allowed his shadow to completely envelop the old man. "Divide?" Dante whispered hoarsely, leaning in until his fiery eyes were locked onto Lorenzo’s terrified gaze. "You came into my home, burned my property, shot my men, and tried to touch my woman... and now you talk about dividing power?" "Dante, think of the alliance! If you kill me, the entire Southern faction will—" B A N G ! Without a moment of hesitation or a flicker of an eye, Dante pulled the trigger, shooting Count Lorenzo’s right kneecap. "AAAGHHH!" Lorenzo’s hysterical scream shattered the silence of the catacombs as the old man collapsed to his knees on the wet floor, clutching his shattered, bloodsoaked leg. Alessia covered her mouth with both hands, eyes wide as she witnessed the merciless cruelty displayed by Dante. Dante holstered his scorching pistol, then reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a blackbladed folding knife—the same knife he had used to cut the bindings on Alessia’s wrists the night they first met. He knelt on one knee before the groaning Lorenzo, then slid the cold blade under the old man's jaw, forcing him to look up. "I don't need your alliance, Lorenzo," Dante stated, his voice calm yet radiating an aura of darkness capable of freezing blood. "And that girl... Alessia Valenti... she is not a hostage you can share. She is mine. Her body, her blood, her soul, and the entire throne she inherits... all belong to Dante Moretti." "You... you are a demon..." Lorenzo whispered hoarsely, gasping for breath. Dante offered a thin smile—a terrifying, cold smirk. "You’re only just realizing that?" With one quick and precise motion, Dante slammed the hilt of his knife into Lorenzo’s temple, knocking the old man unconscious instantly. Dante stood slowly, exhaling heavily as he wiped the enemy blood dripping down his cheek. He turned around to face Alessia, who stood rigid in the corner of the catacomb. For a few seconds, no words passed between them. There was only an intense exchange of gazes between two souls bound by blood, lies, and a burning destiny. Dante walked toward Alessia. Each heavy step left a trail of blood on the marble floor. When he stopped right in front of her, a heated aura—infused with the scent of tobacco, sweat, and the iron tang of blood—assaulted Alessia’s senses. Alessia did not back away. She looked up, staring into Dante’s obsidian eyes, which now seemed dimmed, revealing the remnants of exhaustion and emptiness behind his demonic mask. Dante’s large, warm, bloodstained hand reached out slowly, his trembling fingers wiping the teardrops and bloodstains from Alessia’s smooth cheek with a strange tenderness that stood in stark contrast to his cruelty moments before. "Are you all right, piccola tigre?" Dante whispered raspy, his voice sounding deep yet fragile all at once. Alessia held her breath. Her trembling hand slowly rose, touching Dante’s shoulder, torn and bleeding from a gunshot wound. "You... you're hurt, Dante." "These wounds are nothing," Dante murmured low, his fingers moving to the back of Alessia’s neck, pulling her face closer until their foreheads touched. "The most important thing... is that you are still in my arms." The touch, the intense emotional tension, and the realization that this demonic man had just razed hell to save her sent a strange, shiverinducing vibration through Alessia’s chest. The path to freedom at the speed boat lay wide open behind them, yet at this moment, Alessia realized one thing that dangerously threatened her heart: She was no longer sure... if she truly wanted to escape the golden cage of the demon named Dante Moretti.
