THE CATACOMBS OF COMO The silence inside the underground stairwell was thick and deafening. The damp, ancient stone walls absorbed the echo of Alessia and Marco’s footsteps, while the vibrations from explosions and bursts of automatic gunfire overhead thrummed deep into the soles of their feet. The scent of wet earth and moss mingled with the acrid smell of gunpowder lingering from Dante’s study. "Quickly, Miss Alessia!" Marco whispered, his voice halfway to a shout. His sharp eyes scanned every corner of the stone stairs as they spiraled down into the darkness. One hand gripped Alessia’s arm tightly, while the other brandished a Sig Sauer pistol with a small tactical light glowing beneath the barrel. Alessia ran halfdragged, her blue dress now stained with black dust and concrete shards. Her breathing was ragged, her chest heaving from an overwhelming rush of adrenaline. "Where are we going, Marco?! What about Dante?!" "Don Moretti knows what he is doing, Miss!" Marco replied firmly without slowing his pace. "My only duty is to ensure you reach the underground pier safely!" C R A S H ! A massive tremor struck the upper foundations once more. Fine stone dust and rubble rained from the tunnel ceiling, coating Alessia’s hair and shoulders. She stopped abruptly, staring toward the upper stairs, which were receding further into the darkness. Her thoughts returned to the image of Dante in the shattered study. The man stood alone, defying dozens of enemies to protect her. Dante was indeed the devil who had stolen her freedom, threatened her mother’s life, and bought her like a commodity... but tonight, that devil was gambling with his life so that the Valenti blood in Alessia’s veins would not be spilled by the enemy. "Miss, we don't have time!" Marco urged, pulling her arm harder. But before they could take another step, a heavy sound of metal clashing echoed from above. The secret door in the study had been forced open! "Find the woman! Don Lorenzo wants the Valenti heir alive!" A voice with a distinct Southern Italian accent rang sharply from the top of the passage, followed by the heavy thud of combat boots descending the stairs rapidly. "Bastards," Marco hissed. He immediately shoved Alessia behind a protrusion of an old stone pillar jutting from the tunnel wall. "Stay here and don't make a sound, Miss!" Marco turned, stood in the center of the narrow passage, and aimed his pistol upward. BANG! BANG! BANG! Three quick shots erupted from Marco’s weapon, drawing cries of pain from two of the attacking soldiers who tumbled down, clogging the staircase. But there were too many of them. A barrage of return fire sprayed downward, sparking against the stone walls. G R U N T ! "Ugh!" Marco groaned, stifled, as a bullet grazed his right shoulder. He stumbled backward, colliding with the pillar where Alessia was hiding. "Marco!" Alessia shrieked, covering her mouth as she saw fresh blood soak through the bodyguard’s shirt. "I’m fine..." Marco hissed, his teeth gritted against the pain. He reached into his suit pocket, pulled out an ancient, ornate silver key, and thrust it into Alessia’s trembling hand. "Run to the end of this tunnel. There is an iron door leading to the secret pier. There’s a speedboat there. Turn the key and get out of here!" "I can't leave you alone!" Alessia insisted, her eyes welling with fear and guilt. "If you are caught, Don Moretti’s sacrifice and that of every guard in this villa will have been for nothing!" Marco shouted, his eyes blazing with absolute loyalty. "Run, Miss Alessia! Now!" Marco turned back and began firing at the encroaching enemy again, using his own body as the final shield. With no other choice, Alessia turned and ran with all her might down the narrowing, dark stone passage. The dim light was nearly nonexistent, forcing her to trail her trembling palms along the rough stone wall. Her footsteps echoed over puddles of underground water. The sound of gunfire behind her slowly faded, replaced by the rush of water and the lapping of small waves muffled behind the stone walls. She had arrived at the catacombs beneath Villa di Pietra—a secret dock connected directly to a hidden cove of Lake Como. At the end of the tunnel, a rusted iron door stood firm. Alessia approached it, inserted the silver key Marco had given her, and turned it with all her strength. CLICK! The old iron bolt shifted. Alessia pushed the heavy door open, revealing a dark, manmade cavern. Moonlight reflected off the calm surface of Lake Como inside the grotto. A twinengine speedboat sat neatly beside a small wooden pier. "Freedom," Alessia whispered, her breath hitching. This was the chance she had always dreamed of. An exit from Dante Moretti’s gilded cage. She could board this boat, escape to Switzerland—only a few miles from Lake Como—and then find a way to save her mother in secret. However, just as she stepped toward the wooden pier, a tall shadow stepped out from the shroud of darkness in the corner of the cave. "A truly beautiful sight, is it not, Miss Valenti?" The voice was cold, measured, and deeply authoritative. Alessia froze. She turned slowly, her eyes widening as she recognized the silverhaired figure standing with a goldtipped cane, flanked by four burly, heavily armed men. Count Lorenzo. The old man offered a thin smile—a triumphant smirk that made the hair on Alessia’s arms stand up. "You... how are you here?" Alessia’s voice caught in her throat. "Dante Moretti is clever, yes, but he is too young to understand that history always repeats itself," Count Lorenzo said quietly, stepping toward her. "I built these catacombs with Dante’s father decades ago, Alessia. I know every crevice and exit in this villa." Alessia stepped back by instinct, but two of Lorenzo’s guards quickly circled around to cut off her path, fully enclosing her. "Don’t touch me!" Alessia screamed, clenching her fists tightly. Count Lorenzo stopped a few paces in front of her, staring into the girl’s Mediterranean eyes with deep satisfaction. "The pure blood of the Valenti has finally returned to my hands. Dante thought he could hide you and control the South on his own. Tonight, this villa will be his grave, and you... you will come home with us to Naples." "Dante won't let you win!" Alessia shouted, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Dante Moretti is already dead up there, little girl," Lorenzo cut in coldly. "My men have burned his study to the ground. No one survives a rain of lead like that tonight." The words hit Alessia’s chest like a giant sledgehammer. Her face turned deathly pale. Dante... dead? A void of strange, profound grief suddenly enveloped her soul. The devil she hated and feared most... had fallen protecting her? Count Lorenzo signaled with his hand. "Take her to the helicopter on the outer island." Two of Lorenzo’s guards stepped forward and grabbed Alessia’s arms roughly. She struggled, kicking and screaming, but their grip was too strong. B A N G ! A largecaliber gunshot shattered the silence of the underground cavern. The head of the guard holding Alessia’s right arm suddenly burst; fresh blood sprayed across Alessia’s dress and face as the man’s body collapsed, lifeless, onto the dock! Everyone in the cave recoiled in shock. From the darkness of the iron door Alessia had just passed through, a tall, imposing figure stepped slowly out from behind the veil of gunpowder smoke. His suit was torn, his black shirt soaked in the blood of his enemies, and his handsome face was smeared with the dust and soot of battle. Yet, his obsidian eyes glowed with a pure, dark fire capable of freezing hell itself. Dante Moretti. In his right hand, he held a Desert Eagle, still venting wisps of smoke. "Who gave you permission..." Dante whispered, his voice raspy, heavy, and filled with a suffocating, murderous aura as his eyes locked onto Count Lorenzo. "...to touch my woman?"
