THE SHADOW AT PALAZZO SERBELLONI Night in Milan transformed into a grand stage for Italy’s most influential elite. Palazzo Serbelloni—a neoclassical masterpiece of soaring marble pillars and gargantuan crystal chandeliers—was packed with politicians, oldmoney magnates, and covert crime bosses. Classical music from a string orchestra flowed softly, mingling with the clinking of champagne flutes and the hollow sound of forced laughter. As the main doors swung open, the room fell silent for a heartbeat. Dante Moretti stepped inside with the grace of a king of the shadows. A charcoal suit, tailored by the finest hands, clung perfectly to his athletic frame. Yet, it was not just the Capo’s presence that commanded attention, but the woman at his side. Alessia walked beside him. A deep crimson silk dress draped over her exquisite figure, while a black rose diamond necklace at her throat glittered with intimidating brilliance beneath the crystal light. Dante’s arm wrapped around her waist, his grip possessive and firm, serving as a silent, absolute warning to anyone in the room not to linger their gaze too long. "Smile, piccola tigre," Dante whispered hoarsely near her ear as they moved through the crowd of guests who bowed respectfully to make way. "You are the center of attention tonight." "They aren't looking at me out of admiration, Dante," Alessia replied coldly, her eyes fixed straight ahead. "They are looking at me as if they’ve spotted fresh prey in your lion’s den." Dante let out a low chuckle—a baritone sound, deep and dangerous. "Then let them know that whoever dares to touch my prey... will rot at the bottom of a lake." As they moved deeper toward the main art gallery, several senior mafia figures and highend businessmen approached Dante to discuss a new port project. Alessia seized the moment to shift slightly, her gaze drifting to an antique 18thcentury oil painting mounted on the marble wall. Her instincts as a Bocconi University art student flickered to life. Her eyes scanned the detail of the brushstrokes and the texture of the paint, which was peeling slightly at the corner of the canvas. "A truly breathtaking use of chiaroscuro," Alessia murmured, unaware of her own voice. "The contrast of the shadows in the corner captures a very palpable suffering." "A sharp observation for a woman as keen as you, Signorina." An authoritative, elderly voice broke her trance. She turned to find a middleaged man with silver hair and an exclusive suit standing nearby. He held a goldtopped, carved wooden cane, and his piercing eyes studied her with an unusual intensity. Count Lorenzo—one of the patriarchs of the most revered oldmoney circles in Southern Italy. "Thank you, sir," Alessia replied, polite but guarded. Count Lorenzo stepped closer. His eyes no longer traced the painting but meticulously mapped the features of her face—from the Mediterranean depth of her eyes to her jawline and the dimple at the corner of her lip. The old man’s face paled slightly, as if he had just seen a ghost from the past. "What is your name, young lady?" Count Lorenzo asked, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed shock. "Alessia," she answered briefly. Before the Count could say more, a dark shadow fell over them. Dante was already behind Alessia, positioning his towering frame like a shield that blocked the old man's view. A suffocating, lethal aura suddenly radiated from the Capo. "Count Lorenzo," Dante greeted, his voice cold enough to freeze the air around them. "Since when are you interested in things that belong to me?" Count Lorenzo offered a faint smile, regaining his composure, though his eyes still managed to dart toward Alessia over Dante’s shoulder. "Don Moretti," Lorenzo said in a calm tone. "I was merely admiring the young lady’s beauty and her knowledge of art. She... reminds me of a great family long lost to the southern lands." Dante narrowed his eyes, his jaw tightening. His grip on Alessia’s waist hardened, applying enough pressure to make her wince, though she remained silent. "She is not your concern, Lorenzo. Leave before I lose my patience," Dante threatened, not with a raised voice, but with a chilling, absolute certainty. Count Lorenzo bowed his head slightly in farewell. But before turning away, he looked straight into Alessia’s eyes and whispered a single, foreign word that made her soul tremble: "Valenti..." Alessia’s blood ran cold. Her heart hammered against her ribs in a frantic rhythm. Valenti? What did it mean? Why did the name feel so familiar, yet so alien? "We’re leaving," Dante hissed sharply in her ear, pulling her arm with a rough motion to guide her out of the gallery, ignoring the bewildered stares of the other guests. Alessia was dragged along at Dante’s side, but her mind was no longer at the gala. The word spoken by Count Lorenzo echoed in her head, triggering a new puzzle—one that would shift her path from that of a prisoner to a woman holding the key to a great secret of the underworld.
