Chapter 6: Shadow Of The Familiar

2245 Words
Aria hobbled through the forest, her ankle throbbing with every step. The morning sun illuminated her path, but it was of little comfort. She didn’t know where she was going, and the oppressive silence of the forest only heightened her unease. Then she heard it. A faint noise carried through the trees. It was distant, but unmistakable—voices. Familiar voices. She stopped, straining her ears. “What...?” she whispered Her heart leapt. It couldn’t be real. She was too deep in the forest, wasn’t she? And yet, the sounds were there—voices, laughter, the noise of the little children happy that the week was finally over even the faint clinking of metal, like someone pounding a hammer. The unmistakable sounds of her village. She had the urge to run but hesitated, suspicion creeping into her mind. The forest had played tricks before. Could this be another one? But as the noise grew louder, curiosity and a faint spark of hope drove her forward. Every step felt surreal as the forest seemed to thin around her, the trees parting almost unnaturally. Then, through the gaps in the branches, she saw it—the familiar outline of her village. The edge of the forest was just a few meters ahead. She stumbled forward, her breath catching in her throat. It was real. The dirt paths, the small wooden houses, the smoke rising from chimneys—it was all there. Relief washed over her, almost bringing her to tears. “I can't believe i made it” aria said out loud falling to the ground as if she would disappear back into the forest any moment. Although she was out she still had a long way to go to get home, Aria stumbled forward, her injured ankle protesting with every step. The pain unbearable but the faint voices and familiar noises spurred her on. Determined to get home as fast as possible Her thoughts raced. As if just realizing it aria paused “What if he didn’t make it?” She shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. The fight replayed in her mind, the harsh words they exchanged, her frustration with his hesitation. “Why did I push him so hard? Why didn’t I listen?” Aria cried as different thought raced through her mind A wave of guilt washed over her. She didn’t even know where he was—or if he was alive. But the fear of the forest and the relief of hearing something familiar kept her moving forward. She could see the entrance of her village was just ahead. She hesitated, her heart pounding. Part of her wanted to turn back and look for him, but the shadows of the forest behind her seemed to reach out, warning her against it. Aria began shaking her head repeatedly “I can’t. I can’t go back. Not there... not alone.” Clutching her injured side, she limped towards the entrance. Still inside the forest, milo trudged forward, his frustration mounting. He had no sense of direction, and every path he took seemed to lead nowhere. Then he heard it. Faint at first, the sound of voices and the rhythmic clanging of metal. He froze, his breath hitching. He started began racing this mind going back to the previous night As he ran forward eager to escape from something he didn't know the sound and noise grew loudy Milo froze as he realized the sound was coming from somewhere near and it sounds like the noise of people unlike the one of yesterday. He turned in the direction of the noise, doubt warring with hope in his mind. “This better not be another trick.” he said he heart filling with hope He quickened his pace, brushing past low-hanging branches and stumbling over roots. As the sound grew louder, he started recognizing the voices—people from the village. He could hear the butcher’s hearty laugh and the chatter of children playing. Finally, the trees began to thin, and his heart raced as he saw the edge of the forest. Beyond it, the village lay bathed in sunlight, looking just as it had when they left. He stepped out cautiously, half-expecting the scene to vanish. But it didn’t. It was real. He let out a shaky breath, a mix of relief and disbelief. “I’m out. I actually made it out...” he said laughing He didn’t linger, heading straight for his home, his mind still reeling from the ordeal. stumbled through the dense undergrowth, his jaw clenched in frustration and fear. He gritted his teeth, his thoughts a whirlwind of anger and concern. He mind going back to Aria “She wanted this. She dragged me into this cursed forest, and now... Now she’s probably—” He stopped himself, his chest tightening. The thought of her not making it was unbearable, but the anger he clung to felt safer than the fear. “She’s strong. Stubborn. She probably found her way out... or maybe…”he said trying to justify his actions His fists clenched as he fought back the wave of doubt. The thought of turning back crossed his mind, but the forest seemed alive, pressing him forward with every step. He shook his head, forcing his focus you I'll lalàon the noises ahead. “ I can’t go back. Not now. I need to get home first. Then I’ll... I’ll figure it out.’ he say walking faster . The two of them got home taking their own routes. As Aria reached the village she braced as self for the question of where she had been and wondered whether to lie or not but as she walked pass everyone greeted her just like they would everyday and it continued not her house was in sight it was strange to her because she was sure her mother would have had a search party look for her Aria stepped into her house, the familiar scent of dinner wafting through the air. She was still wearing her school uniform, her shoes caked in dirt and her hair tangled from the night’s ordeal. She quietly closed the door behind her, half-expecting someone to greet her with questions, maybe even a bit of panic. But instead, her mother was standing by the stove, stirring something in a pot. Her mother glanced over her shoulder, her expression stern. “Why are you still in that uniform? You’ve been out all day.”her mother said looking back at the food The girl paused, her mind still racing with thoughts of the forest, but she shook her head, too relieved to answer. There was no concern in her mother’s voice, no sign that anyone had been worried. “Take that off and get changed. And don’t stand around, I need help in the kitchen.”her mother barked Arya didn’t even question it. She went straight to her room, peeling off her school uniform and feeling the weight of the day’s strange events begin to slip away.she took her bath thankful for the warmth of water on her body, her body aching everywhere she almost fell asleep. She quickly dressed up As she entered the kitchen to help her mother, her elder sister glanced up from where she was chopping vegetables. “Wow you took long i almost thought you went outside again”her sister joked Arya forced a smile, shrugging it off The sound of her younger brother fighting with his spelling book made Aria glance over. He was trying hard to write “beautiful” correctly, but the letters were a jumble of mistakes. His little sister, no older than five, was standing beside him, trying to help him form the letters, but making a mess of the page. Everything felt so… normal.too normal “No, you write it this way”her little sister Anna scoled her brother Aria watched them for a moment, her mind still spinning from her time in the forest, yet a sense of relief washed over her. She was home, and nothing had changed. Meanwhile, Milo walked into his house, he had prayed at least his family noticed his disapperance as all the people he saw didn't the familiar warmth of the living room greeting him. His younger sister, no older than 3, dashed toward him with a squeal. “You’re home!” Without hesitation, she flung her arms around him, the scent of freshly baked bread still lingering in the air. The guy couldn’t help but smile. But the sight of his baby brother, who was a mess of food, caught his attention. His mother was trying to feed him, but the little one was more interested in throwing his spoon around, making a mess of the table. “Stop playing with your food, you little rascal!”his mother voice boomed across the dining table As the guy stepped inside, his mother turned, giving him a quick glance. “Perech get away from your brother he stinks I don't want to have to give you a little bath”his mother said eyeing him “What are you still wearing that dirty school uniform for? And so early in the morning too.” He didn’t say anything. There was no concern in her voice either. No mention of where he had been or why he’d disappeared. It was as if the day before never happened. “Go clean yourself up and come help with the baby. He’s impossible today.”she said giving up on feeding him Milo just nodded and headed for his room, pushing any lingering doubts to the back of his mind. Everything was fine. It had to be. As the day wore on, the villagers went about their routines, unaware of the strange night the two had endured. Neither of them spoke of the forest or what had happened. Aria sat in her room, staring at her bandaged ankle, while milo paced in his yard, glancing occasionally toward the forest’s edge. Constantly worried about each but afraid what the villagers would think if the learnt they had abandoned the other. The two of them didn't leave the throughout the day until Aria mother forced her to take her siblings for the evening story. ~ “Melo’ he turned to see his little sister age the door of his room standing and just staring at him before she ran towards him “Peach what's wrong “he said sitting up to carry her *Story story Mama said to take me for story”she said shaking not having energy to argue to stood up to take her ~ The night was alive with soft chatter and the occasional laughter of children as they gathered at the center of the village, lanterns casting warm glows across the crowd. It was story time, a beloved tradition, where all the children—and even some adults—would gather to hear the tales of the past. Aria walked in with her little sister, while her elder sister carried her little brother, still unsettled from the day but masking it with a forced smile. She took a seat close to the front, ready to let the stories distract her from her lingering unease. Milo arrived a few moments later, standing near the back, arms crossed. He wasn’t sure why he had come. Something about the familiar routine felt grounding, even if the memories of the forest refused to fully leave his mind. The night seemed normal. Peaceful. The crowd grew quiet as the storyteller stepped forward. But instead of the usual grandma, an old man emerged from the shadows, his hunched figure casting an unfamiliar silhouette. He leaned heavily on a carved walking stick, his voice deep and gravelly as he greeted the gathering. “Children, tonight’s story is an old one. One about a plant… a plant that saved our ancestors.”he said walking forward to sit Ara’s brows furrowed. “Where’s Grandma? She’s never missed a story night.” Aria thought She scanned the crowd, searching for the familiar figure, but the grandma was nowhere to be seen. Milyo noticed it too, his arms dropping to his sides. “Where is she? This feels wrong.” She glanced around, searching for any sign of the familiar figure who always took her spot at the center. But the grandma was nowhere to be seen. Unease curled in her stomach. At the back of the crowd, Milo felt the same. The old man’s voice was unfamiliar, and his presence felt strange, almost out of place. Both of them scanned the gathering, their eyes roving across the sea of faces—until their gazes met. For a moment, time seemed to stop. Ara’s breath hitched, and Milyo’s arms dropped to his sides. Relief flooded her chest at the sight of him, alive and unharmed, as if the nightmare of the forest had been nothing more than a terrible dream. But the relief was short-lived. Her thoughts turned dark. “How did he get out? Was it the same way I did?” Milyo’s face was pale, his jaw tight. ‘ She’s alive. She’s here. But… how?” Their shared horror deepened as their attention shifted back to the old man at the center. Where was the grandma? Why wasn’t she here, telling her usual stories? The old man began his tale, his voice weaving through the crowd like smoke.
