Chapter 16: Fever 2

Diana’s pov Those red eyes, they are now on the darker side. Not only that, but he has also grown up as well. More mature and taller as well, I lived with a man who looked like he walked out of a Greek mythology book. And yet, the man in front of me has left me completely speechless. I am supposed to be the one in control of this whole situation. But I can feel it, I can feel my control slowly slipping as he walks towards me. Like a f*****g predator stalking its prey, that look in his eyes he had that night was back. He had promised that he would come for me and that I should wait. And the way he is looking at me is like he has made up his mind to never let me go. But I refuse to let him have any power over me, not now, not ever. Ezra is a lot like his father, and he will surely be a tyrant just like him. Which is why Ezra has to die. He wrapped his hands around me, and I pulled out the silver dagger I always have with me. The same one that was covered in his blood as I was running for my life that night. But he didn’t seem fazed, nor did he let me go. He just put a few inches between us so he could look at my face. He placed his other hand on mine that is holding the dagger to his neck. I watched how he smirked and started pulling my hand towards him. The dagger was slowly tearing into his skin, and yet his smile didn’t falter. “I would be more than happy to die by your hand. But what about you? Can you live without me?” He sounded so confident, my eyes landed on my own hand that was shaking. I knew the day would come, so why is my hand shaking? I put down my hand and placed the dagger in my jacket again. He then wrapped his hands around me again, pulling me into another hug. He buried his head on my shoulder, and I felt his entire body relax. “You are even more perfect than I remember,” he whispered. Suddenly, something felt wrong; his entire body started radiating heat that wasn’t normal. I slowly pulled away so I could look at his face, and his eyes were closed. His face was filled with pain, and there was sweat on his face now. I placed my hand on his forehead and frowned as I looked at him. He was fine a few moments ago. How does he suddenly have a fever? I placed him on the bed. I can’t kill him now, without him, I won’t be able to walk into his pack. And that isn’t the only reason, I think that I am just incapable of killing him. From what I remember, his fevers always calm down even if you don’t do anything. I wanted to walk out and leave him to squirm here on his own. But I made the stupid mistake of looking at his face, and this time I didn’t see him. I saw the little boy who was trying to hide his sickness from his father. The little boy looked at me, so confused and surprised that I wasn’t scared of him. I walked outside and found a guy waiting there. He bowed his head the moment his eyes landed on me, and I wanted to roll my eyes. Judging from the scent. He is the one who interrupted us that one time. My aunt wasn’t there; actually, no one was there except for him. “Don’t let anyone in, your Alpha has a fever. That asshole just had to get sick on my watch,” I finished off. I walked to their garden and helped myself to their herbs. I think it is already established that they don’t like me one bit. So, I have decided to give them as many reasons as possible to not like me. You know, so that I can balance things out. I walked back to the room and used a cold compressor to wipe him down. He stopped frowning in his sleep after my time, and I felt myself slowly drift off to sleep as well. Flashback I looked at the room that they have given me, and it was even better than my own bedroom back at home. Ezra is turning 18 tomorrow, and hence a massive party is being thrown in his honour, and we were invited. I was getting ready to sleep when I caught his scent. He stood on the balcony, and I slowly opened the door to glare at him. “I am not feeling very good, Dee.” his voice was extremely low. I looked at him. I have seen this more times than I care to admit. “Then use the herbs I give you. I told you that I am not your nurse,” I whispered, yelling. “Meet me at the cabin.” And just like that, he jumped off the balcony. I stood there fuming. You do one act of kindness, and it bites you in the ass. I prepare herbs for him to take a bath with when he feels like his fever is returning. But if ever it happens when I am around, he demands that I nurse him back to health. I looked in the direction he had disappeared to, and I frowned at this. It’s his birthday tomorrow, and he needs to be in top shape no matter what. I know why he hides it from his family, and he has a good reason. His mother doesn’t care at all about him, and his father would probably think he is weak. I jumped off the balcony and followed him to the cabin. It is still within the pack and a little far from people and their prying eyes. I got there and found him sitting on the couch. It must have taken him all his energy just to get here because he looks like he might faint at any moment. “You look like shit.” I touched his forehead, and his fever was running higher than usual. I don’t even know what causes this illness; he is one of the strongest people I know. If it can leave him looking like this, then I don’t want to know how bad it is. “You came.” He sounded almost relieved, and I just sighed. “Yes, and consider this my birthday present. Don’t expect anything from me after this,” I said as I started preparing. When I was done, he had gathered what was left of his strength and walked to the bed. I started nursing him back to health, and somewhere in that time, I drifted off to sleep. I woke up when I felt a body being pressed against mine. I opened my eyes and found myself in Ezra’s arms, and he was just looking at me. “What happened? How am I in bed with you?” I asked him, and he just shrugged. “You just couldn’t help yourself. Taking advantage of an unconscious guy, what is wrong with you?” That tone told me that he was mocking me, and I didn’t like it one bit. But he had this smile on his face, those are rare from Ezra. A few hours ago, he was so sick that it seemed like he was on the brink of death. And yet now, he looked healthier than I have ever seen him. I was about to retort and try to say something sharp and sassy, but he pulled me towards him even more. His body pressed against mine, as if he wanted to absorb me into his skin. “It’s my birthday, aren’t you going to wish me a happy birthday?” he asked me. He buried his head on my neck and actually started humming. He is now 18, hopefully he will find his mate and then leave me the hell alone. End of flashback I felt him as he tried to pull me to the bed so I could sleep besides. I opened my eyes and looked at him with a frown. “I tended to you because killing you would be more satisfying than letting a fever do it. Don’t push your luck.” I got up and headed outside to get some fresh air. I didn’t look back. It was in the middle of the night, and yet that guy was still standing outside. “You should go and sleep, it’s after midnight,” I said to him and he bowed his head. “We are in enemy territory. It is my job to guard you and the Alpha,” he said. His tone sounded more respectful towards me than it did towards Ezra back then. I have never seen him around that much when I visited the Alpha King’s mansion. But I understand his concern if they found out that Ezra was sick. They wouldn’t hesitate to try to kill all of us here and now. “I don’t understand you two at all. He is obsessed with you and you know that. You act like you don’t like him, but then worry about his health. Who is Ezra to you?” Zayn asked me after some time. Who is Ezra to me?
