Chapter 41: Duel

1205 Words
Diana’s pov I watched as Alpha James’s friends were digging graves for themselves. Ezra sat listening, following their every movement. In that moment, it hit me that Ezra was now the Alpha King. It made me remember how dangerous and patient this man could be. An impulsive Ezra is scary, but a calm Ezra is dangerous. I watched as he signaled the omega to keep pouring alcohol in their glasses. While he sat there, completely sober and just listened to them. As the night went on, the more drunk the old geezers got, the slipperier they became. Ezra doesn’t pay attention to a lot of people. So the fact that he is paying this much attention to them got them cocky. I watched as they exposed themselves without a care in the world. By the time midnight hit, Ezra probably had heard enough to bury them. Which would be perfect for me. I suspected that some of them might be just as corrupt as he, and I was right. I will let Ezra handle them; my work is to remove the father and son from power. Jane, she had been here and had been overlooked all her life. If she is as smart as I think she is, she must have something. She resents her father for denying what truly belongs to her. I bet he has treated her like she is nothing for a long time. Not getting rewarded for your achievements and having them handed over to your brother. I bet she has realized that they don’t respect her or appreciate what she has done. And because of that, a smart woman like her must have some insurance. I am hoping that does, that way I will be able to bury those two. But seeing how sloppy Alpha James is. Something tells me that the Alpha King merely used him as a tool and nothing else. Destroying him would probably do nothing to hurt the Alpha King’s fraction of supporters. But keeping him in power will certainly hurt me in the future. It’s a one-edged sword, and the sharpened part is directed at me. “I guess your pieces on the chessboard have been positioned,” Ezra said as we were getting ready for bed. “And from the looks of things, it seems like you just joined the match. What? You couldn't let me have all the fun by myself?” I asked him. He chuckled, the sound igniting a fire in my heart. He looked at me as if seeing me for the first time and smirked. He walked closer, pulling me by my waist, and then kissed my forehead. “The walls in this place are very thin. Otherwise, I would be devouring you until you lose your voice.” I know what he is talking about. There are spies positioned in the rooms near ours. Even now, we are keeping our voices as low as possible. Back at home, his room is farther than the others, so we can stay in it for as long as we want. Plus, when things get hot, I always use a spell to soundproof the room. I don’t want to risk using magic in this place. Plus, a little distance would do us some good. As if reading my mind, Ezra put some distance between us. But the promise in his eyes told me that today is an exception. We went to bed, and the next morning, everyone was busy preparing for the ceremony. It wasn’t as lavish as Ezra’s coronation, but they put out all the stops. Ezra and I sat in the front row. As they were talking, I kept staring at the door, waiting for Jane to come out. Don’t tell me she chickened out at the last minute. Come on, I put all my hopes on her, and she is not coming. Is she okay with being ordered around by her foolish brother? Is she okay with letting the fate of her people be in the hands of someone so incompetent? I caught the scent of blood about the same time as Ezra did. He put a protective hand around me and seemed ready for a fight. After a minute, everyone else caught the scent as well. The doors opened wide and stood there covered in blood. “I object to this. Brother, I challenge you to a duel for the throne.” Jane’s voice didn’t waver. She was covered in blood, with dark circles around her eyes. There were marks on her feet and legs as if she had been held hostage. I looked at that scum of a father. Don’t tell me he suspected this would happen and locked her up. Not only that, but he tortured his own daughter. “As the Alpha, I refuse this challenge. I won’t allow it to happen,” Alpha James said. “Well then, it’s a good thing I am here. I, for one, wouldn’t mind seeing a duel.” Ezra has this smirk on his face, and then he looked in my direction. “How about you? You are the second-highest-ranking official in this place. Wouldn’t you like to see a duel, Diana?” he asked me. I had to stop myself from smiling. “I would love that.” Short and simple, as if I were merely agreeing to him and didn’t orchestrate the whole thing. I watched as Alpha James and his son went deathly pale. “But before that, can someone have a look at her wounds?” I looked at Ezra, surprised. It’s not like him to be so considerate. And just like that, the ceremony was put on hold, and people attended to Jane. I watched as Alpha James was pacing around. Anxious and not knowing how to get out of it. Jane was tended to, and after a few hours, she seemed better. The duel started, and it went just as one would expect. She mopped the floor with her brother, and she wasn’t even in top shape. Someone like her is used to fighting even when heavily injured. After the win, no one could say a word to challenge her for the title. She won square and fair; she would be the next Alpha. However, her father, being a pathetic man that he is, stood in her way. “You will not do this, as your father I order you to let your brother be Alpha,” he said, his voice full of venom. He was directing it all towards his daughter, the daughter he should be proud of. He denied her what was rightfully had and when she takes it back, he tries to stand in her way. “Then you leave me no choice, Father,” she said. She walked towards Ezra and me. Bowed her head and took out a USB drive. “This has evidence of all my father's and brother’s wrongdoings. Along with their accomplices. Please ensure that justice is served.” Her voice was calm. I knew it; it was a gamble, but I knew that she must have gathered evidence against her father. Isn’t it great when things just work out all on their own?
