15The struggle for gay rights in Miami politicized men and women in San Francisco who never took an active interest in the gay movement previously. The media made homosexuality a national issue and the condemnation of our city by right-wing Christian crusaders provoked us enough to do battle. The community here came out in great numbers for the organizational meetings, fund raisers, and demonstrations which culminated in a Gay Pride Parade that attracted a quarter of a million and established San Francisco as the gay capital of the world. I was one of the five thousand who participated in the first gay march in New York a year after Stonewall. I wasn’t sure what would happen to us between Christopher Street and Central Park.
