By the time Kain returned to the motel, he expected Lucy to be gone. Instead, she was still there—curled up on the bed, sitting cross-legged and crying hard, her face blotchy and eyes red and swollen. Her sobs filled the room, raw and unfiltered. Had she hated his kiss that much? “Hi,” he said softly, almost surprised. “You’re still here.” Gratitude threatened to slip into his voice, but he buried it beneath a neutral tone. Without ceremony, he dumped the paper bags he was carrying onto the bed. “I got donuts, coffee, bread… a bunch of pastries. And, uh… clothes.
