Ariel's POV.
"Wait," I stopped her, still shocked at all his information dump. "How do you know all this?" I asked, already knowing the truth but still denying it deep inside.
"I was you once," she said, smiling sadly. "An optimistic Omega who got into the prestigious AWA. Well, look what I am now! I'm always around her, ready to serve at her beck and call. I hear and know a lot of things. Hatred and thoughts of revenge are useless for me at this point, but at least I'll give some good warning advice to you now."
She then stood up and tucked her hair behind her ears, "For your own good, it'll be better for you to either leave AWA, or get a strong backer in the school, or even exile yourself. It's that bad. The ball is on your court. What you do with this is totally up to you."
She carried her bag and looked at the dumbfounded me again.
"As for me, I've decided to go into exile in the human world. Hopefully, I'm able to survive there as a drifter or something. I'm just telling you all this to earn myself some good karma. Take care of yourself, Ariel."
Her dead-looking eyes finally showed some emotion as she then resolutely bowed a bit and walked out of the cafe with long strides without looking back.
What. The. Hell!?
It took a few minutes for all that to fully sink in before I eventually snapped out of my shocked state. It's definitely a lot to take in.
How would I have ever imagined that dear old me would eventually leave my mundane everyday life into something far more? More dangerous, challenging, limit-testing, and to be honest, quite a bit exciting.
I pushed my round-rimmed glasses up my nose and stared at the now desolate cafe entrance where the girl had just exited. I didn't even get her name or thank her. I steeled my resolve and sighed deeply. For her to pick exile over serving Candy, she must've seen hell and she must've been pushed to the end of what her limit could tolerate.
Exile is definitely not as relaxing or ordinary as it sounds. For us Werewolves and even other supernatural beings, humans have a deep-rooted hatred and fear of us. True, we maintain our boundaries and hardly interact or interfere with each other except, of course, for a few extreme exemptions like Werewolf hunters, vampire hunters, human adventurer interventions, and even human hunters on our side. Things have been that way for a long time now.
For the girl to choose exile, it means she'd rather die a probably gruesome and harsh death taking her chance in the human world than stay here.
'Just what in the name of all things evil must she have seen and gone through to have such courage and mindset?' I asked myself.
The thought scared me and I felt goosebumps on my skin.
'But what is this?' I asked myself and I felt an emotion - I felt my heart rate increase. This only happens when I see an almost impossible challenge that I'd like to overcome.
'I must be losing my mind! Why am I getting all excited?' I chided myself as I removed my glasses and rested my forehead on the table as I tried to get my emotions in order.
I was both scared and excited about what the future would hold for me. What would become of my family, education, friends, and future with this development?
Finally noticing my state, Stacy and Brie came over and sat with me, "What's wrong, Ari?" They both asked with worried looks on their faces.
*****
When we arrived home, Stacy, Brie, Daphne, and I were all sitting on the floor of my room. I've already told them the full story and we're gonna discuss how we'll take care of this issue.
My dad hurriedly shooed us out of the cafe when I told him that we had a "ladies' emergency" - which is technically not a lie.
The atmosphere in the room was tense and grim. I even sensed some killing intent from Daphne. She sometimes got no chill about things like this. Brie snuggled up under my arms providing her own form of emotional support.
"And you really don't wanna drop out?" Stacy asked, breaking the silence.
"No, I don't!" I replied firmly.
Daphne sighed deeply and restrained her dangerous aura. "I knew you'd say that. You're quite stubborn when it comes to issues like this."
I think Daphne of all people should really understand. She was once a bright student too. She was given the choice of attending AWA due to her immense potential in both physical and intellectual fields. She resolutely chose to reject it because her father was also a victim of AWA bullying and partiality.
She joined her father's Direwolf-hunting business. With her talent, she's doing quite okay there now. Stacy and I are the only ones going to school now.
I knew that although I was smart, I was not even a match for Daphne. My physical ability is just on the border of average and slightly below average.
Quitting now was definitely not an option for me - I feel like I can still survive. Being a quitter as an Omega was quite normally disdained but very rare among the Alphas and higher ranks. My mom was also an AWA quitter but she's still okay. As for me, I don't plan to give up!
Deserting…tsk! That's even worse. Deserting or switching packs is even off the table. Being labeled a quitter was still slightly better than being a deserter. The Castor pack abhors and hates deserters. Once in the Castor pack, whether Alpha, Beta, Lycans, or Omega, it'll take a miracle for you to survive deserting. 'Once a Castor, always a Castor!' they say. Deserters are hunted down and straight-up eliminated - unless the deserter moves to a higher-ranked pack and there are very few of those around here.
Exile was also off the table. In the human world, a Werewolf has to be extremely careful. Certain priests and witches are sensitive to supernatural beings like us. Full moons are the worst in the human world too. Due to our uncontrollable transformation on this day, it would be hard to keep the status as a Werewolf hidden.
Sure, I could avoid gatherings on a few occasions, but humans are quite smart. They have special occasions, festivals, gatherings, and events only on full moon nights. Missing one or two is okay, but three or more - I'll be branded a suspect and it'll only be a matter of time before I'm found out.
"So then, what are we gonna do?" Stacy asked after we discussed all those options.
