The Day After

"Is she going to wake up?" She could hear her mother's voice somewhere in the distance. It was all she heard at first and inside she was scuffing. The act she put on in front of everyone was enough to make her vomit. In truth her mother was nothing more than an alcoholic she contently tried to please and always failed. Serena knew why her mother was the way she was. She blamed her daughter for the death of her father. It was okay Serena did to, but at least she was able to move past it enough to live. Her mother just ignored her at home, blamed her and forced her to take care of herself because she couldn't handle it. Couldn't handle having the responsibility without her beloved husband. Now in public you would never know. One thing her mother cared about more then having a drink, was her image. Can't go out without a pretty face even if you're drunk as hell.  "Mrs. Evens, your daughter has suffered many life threatening injuries. Not only did she suffer severe hypothermia from being out all night in the cold, she lost blood from the wound in her leg and that is only the injuries she suffered after someone tied up her hands and raped her. Her body is littered with cuts and scraps as well sever rope burns on her wrists. I don't even want to get into the trauma she experienced from the rape. Even if her body recovers we may still have a long recovery of the mind. Sometimes when the body suffers so much trauma at once, both physical and mental, the body shuts down. All we can do is sit and wait. That being said, I want to know if you will consent to a rape kit. We need to see if we can figure out who did this to her, at least part of what happened to her. I really think that would be best." Serena heard another woman's voice chime in and she was starting to wonder where she was at all. She had been so focused on what her mother was on about she hadn't thought about where she had ended up. She wasn't even sure why she was asleep. What are the talking about? What did they mean trauma? Her questions were quickly answered when she heard beeping, buzzing and the intercom calling one of the doctors in their small hospital to the ER. Everything quickly came rushing back and she realized exactly why they wanted a rape kit and all she could think about is what Dom would do if he realized she was alive and consented to a rape kit.  "I don't think I can consent to that unless she agrees. How long are we talking here? I can't.." Her mother started to argue with the doctor who quickly chimed in trying to talk over her. "Mrs. Evens i think this is for the best. I don't know how long. Please listen to me I think we need to the kit! Mrs. Evens, please..." Both were so engulfed in their argument which was drawing a crowd they hadn't seen her slowly open her eyes, fight against her body's desire to stop moving from the pain and slowly sit up on her hands. She cleared her throat, which felt like razors being drug down on the inside and waited for their attentions," "N...no." Serena struggled to make a sound, and when the no came out her voice was beyond horse and it hurt, but she got their attention. Her mother put on the act exclaiming about how happy she was that she was okay and rushing to the bed hugging her. Which only made Serena groan in pain. Her body was still so sore. The doctor slowly walked over with shock on her face and looked up at her vitals.  "I don't understand. With all your injuries you shouldn't be this alert. You almost died." She quickly jotted down a few notes and smiled at her. Her mother had let her go and sat beside the bed taking her hand as Serena laid back against the bed once more. "Serena, I understand that this is hard to do. You don't want to face your attacker I understand that, but I really think we should find your attacker. Can you please consent to a rape kit?" "No...I don't want to now how did it. I just want to forget about it." Serena quickly shot it down again which didn't please the doctor at all, and before she could push anymore Serena looked at her mom knowing she would play the loving mother and do what was "best" for her.  "She said no doctor. Thank you. Just let me know how long before I can take my daughter home." Her mother shot her down before the doctor could fight them. She nodded and quickly walked away from them and that was enough. Once the door was shut her mother pulled away and walked over to her purse pulling out a bottle of wine and a coffee cup. "You are a piece of work. First you get your father killed and now you go get yourself nearly killed. You just want everything about you don't you? God I hate having to play mother to someone I don't even want. I wish you had died out there, at least I would be rid of you finally. I can't wait for you to be eighteen to get the hell out of my house." "Nice to know you care mom." Serena squeezed out the words looking away from her. Her throat was killing her, it was dry and talking was helping. Her mother rolled her eyes and sat down next to the bed sipping on her morning drink as if it was the last time she would ever taste alcohol.  "Once we find out when you come home I am out of here." She mumbled and it took everything Ser head in order not to cry. Sucking in a deep breath she closed her eyes and let the tear trickle down while the sat in a brief silence. A knock at the room door stopped that making her mother dump the cup and try to hide the smell of liquor that was filling the room with perfume. In entered a older woman in her mid forties with short red hair and soft blue eyes. On her tag red LVN and she had a tray of pills in her hands.  "Hello Serena, I am your Nurse. My name is Laura. The doctor asked me to give you some pain killers and some antibiotics. Then I will run a series of labs so we can make sure you are recovering properly." Laura spoke only to Serena dismissing her mother completely which seemed to piss her off a little bit. Her mother laughed softly and walked over to the bed forcefully holding her daughter's hand.  "So does this mean I can take her home?" She asked half laughing trying to pretend like she carried about what happened to Serena at all.  "Mrs. Adams, your daughter has suffered so much and all you care about is getting her out of the place she will get the best care. I am not trying to tell you how to be a mother or to judge you, but you are lucky you got me as a nurse and not one of those youngins out there. They would be to afraid to call you out on what you are doing wrong and just go call someone to take your daughter away from you. Now your daughter needs to be in this hospital for a few days so we can observe her and make sure there was no permanent damage. By the stench of alcohol coming off you which you try to cover with some cheep perfume I can tell you would rather be anywhere other then here. So let me tell you exactly what you can do while I take care of Serena. You can go home, come visit her once a day to keep the doctor from being suspicious about her support at home and when the time comes for you to take this girl home you come sober. Then once she is home you keep up the treatment by calling a close friend, relative or I will even give you my number because we both know you will be in to much of a drunken haze to care for her properly to do it yourself. And in return for my kindness of letting you have your daughter you will check yourself into a thirty day rehab and get this drinking under control. I will give you a week to do so before I call and have your daughter removed from your home. Do I make myself clear?" The nurse went off on her mother in a way everyone else was to afraid to do and it left her mother stunned for a moment.  "Who do you think you are? I care about my daughter more then anyone or anything. How dare you judge me. I will have your job for this." Her mother started to snap back, putting on that act again making Serena roll her eyes and if it didn't hurt to move she would have slapped her own forehead.  "You will not do anything of the sort, because if you try to I will make sure when Serena leaves it is not in your ca and you are sent to jail for child endangerment and abandonment. Do you understand me?" Laura pointed her gloved hand at her mother who quickly shut up and looked down.  "Yes ma'am." Acting like a wounded child her mother answered back as if her mother had just whooped her for doing something wrong.  "Good. You have a strong, beautiful young lady here that deserves you to be treating her like the woman she is and not the mat you walk on. Now you are free to go. Serena needs all the rest she can get. Get your head on right woman, or you will see what the real world is really like."  Laura dismissed her mother, who grabbed up all her stuff and ran out of the room. Laura smiled at Serena who had stayed quiet through the whole ordeal, mainly because it hurt to talk. "Now let us get you taken care of hunny. Okay so the blue ones are muscle relaxers, they might make you sleepy, but that is okay. We heal better when we are sleeping. The white ones are oxi's we will give you a prescription once you leave but since they are addictive no refills on those. Finally the capsules are the antibiotic. You'll be on them while in the hospital and once you go home you'll need to keep taking them. The wound on your leg was not exactly common or usual. We don't know what kind of infection you might get from it. Here you go hunny, let me help you sit up." Laura helped her bed sit up which made her groan in pain quickly. Her lower body couldn't handle the pressure and if she could have screamed she would have. Dom had done a number on her, that was the only explanation she could come up with. Laura's face never wavered, though Serena could see in her eyes that this was hurting her to. Seeing her in pain because of what happened to her, but Serena didn't want anyone to feel sorry for her. She would not let this define and ruin her life. Once she got settled into a position that didn't make her insides feel like they were falling out, she took down the pills with the bottle of water they offered her. The sweet relief of water coating and lubing her vocal cords was the best feeling of all. She felt as if she hadn't drank in weeks.  "Thank you." Serena replied, her voice still kind of raspy and static, but it was much clearer and felt better whens he talked. Laura nodded and turned away.  "I heard the doc say you turned down the rape kit. I don't want to pry, but don't you want to know who did it?" Laura asked as she got the tubes and stuff ready for the tests. Serena quickly looked away trying not to remember the night. Ever time a memory flashed through her mind it was like it was happening all over again and she would have to live with that for months maybe years. She quickly shook her head no and of course Laura had picked up on the fact why. "Oh hunny, you know who did it don't you? I am so sorry this happened to you. It would help if you put him in jail. I think you should do it. Even if you don't press charges right away, we will always have it on file so you can come back and do it when you are ready." "Thank you Laura, but I don't want to press charges. I just want to forget it." Serena quickly chimed in to stop her, and thankfully she respected her wish and stopped talking. Instead she got to work preparing to take a blood sample and check on her ankle hoping to get a sample for a possible infection.  "This is odd." Laura's face changed when she unwrapped her ankle. Serena could see the bloody bandage as she dropped it on the blanket. She carefully lifted her leg and both of them were staring at the wounds. "This is not normal. The swelling is nearly gone, the wounds are nearly healed. You will defiantly scar, but you should not be healing this quickly. What a strange, unusual occurrence." "What do you mean?" Serena asked her trying to keep the muscle relaxers from putting her to sleep because now she was worried.  "Nothing my dear. Just rest now. You will need it. Maybe your wounds weren't as bad as we first thought. Sometimes our mind can play tricks on us in the middle of an emergency. Now those meds had to have kicked in by now. Just get some sleep and when you wake up I will get you something to eat." Laura quickly swabbed her leg making her gasp sharply before she wrapped it back up and threw away her trash. Serena couldn't argue with her because the meds were in fact kicking and she was drifting in and out of sleep. Last ting she remembered was Laura laying her back and pulling the blankets up around her shoulders like her father used to do and then darkness.
