66. The lion cage

You walk through a very long well-lit tunnel and emerge into what looks like a cave. Walking forward, you find yourself inside a display of rocks and pavilions like you might see at a zoo, only usually from the other side of the moat that’s ahead of you. There’s a musty sweet scent in the air, and you realize that this place must have actually held animals in it, once upon a time. You wonder what it holds for you, now. The pavilion you’re on is lit by torches and you’re divided from the other half of it by a metal cage. On the other side, two men, n***d except for lion masks, lounge on the rocks, stretched out, the torch flame playing off their gilded masks and long, lean, bodies, with manes made of their own flowing golden hair. You walk up to the metal bars that separate them from you,
