Prologue

503 Words
The room smelled of rain and old paper. Outside, thunder rumbled softly across a dark sky while police lights painted the walls in flashes of red and blue. Everything in Elena Brooks’ bedroom looked normal. The neatly folded clothes on the chair. The half-finished cup of coffee on her desk. The tiny fairy lights glowing weakly above her bed. But Elena herself was gone. And beside her rested a black notebook. One of the officers reached for it carefully, noticing words written across the cover in black ink: “Read after I’m gone.” The room fell silent as he opened the first page. The handwriting was messy, almost angry, as though it had been written with shaking hands. “People will call me crazy after this. Maybe they’re right. But monsters are not born. They are created by people who pretend innocence after destroying someone piece by piece.” A pause. Then another line. “This is not just a goodbye, but the truth no one cared enough to listen to while I was still alive.” The officer slowly turned the page. But this wasn’t where the story began. People say memories fade with time. They’re wrong. Some memories don’t disappear. They bury themselves beneath forced smiles, sleepless nights, and broken promises, waiting for the perfect moment to return. Three months ago, everything changed. I used to believe high school would be filled with laughter, late-night conversations, and friendships that lasted forever. I believed the people who promised they would never leave me. I believed kindness was enough. I was wrong. It started with whispers. Then came the rumors. The stares. The messages. Soon, every hallway felt like a battlefield, and every classroom became another place where I had to pretend I was okay. The people I trusted the most became strangers. Some watched in silence. Some turned their backs. And some smiled as my world slowly fell apart. No one asked what really happened. No one cared enough to hear my side. They believed the lies because lies are always louder than the truth. But the truth has a way of finding its way back. Even if it destroys everything in the process. There was something about that night three months ago that everyone wanted to forget. A missing piece. A secret hidden behind frightened eyes and guilty silence. They thought I would never remember. They thought I would never ask questions. They were wrong. This isn’t a story about a perfect girl who saves the day. It’s a story about betrayal. About the scars left by cruelty. About how even the kindest heart can become something unrecognizable when it’s pushed too far. If you’re looking for heroes, you won’t find them here. Only broken people trying to survive the consequences of their choices. And by the time the final page is turned, you’ll understand why some stories don’t end with happily ever after. Some stories end with the truth. And the truth is far more dangerous than any lie.
