After using the bedside urinal, I called for my parents to help me on the walkie talkie left on my bedside table, “could I please get some assistance?”
I could see the sun was just coming up, so hopefully I wasn’t waking my parents. It then occurred to me it was July, and the sun rose before 6AM. Crud! I should have thought of that before I called. I could feel my foot throbbing and knew it was time for more pain medication. Honestly it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be though.
Within minutes, Dad was stumbling into my room, “what can I do for ya son?”
“I’m so sorry I woke you Dad. I need pain medication, a drink, and my urinal emptied please,” I said in a rush. I couldn’t help but feel like a burden when they already had my sister Allison to care for round the clock. I could feel heat in my cheeks, but then thought, this is a normal human function, why does it embarrass me? Grow up Alistar, you aren’t a little kid anymore.
Dad left the room but returned shortly with my medication and a drink. While I grabbed them from him, he dumped the urinal in the toilet, rinsed it out with soapy water, put the cap on, and set it on the floor next to my bed. He then returned to the bathroom, washed his hands, and came out wiping them on a hand towel. Sitting in the chair at my beside, he asked, “Are you having a lot of pain this morning?”
“Enough I wanted to try to head it off. When do I see the doctor again? Just wondering when I get to see the mess the wolf made of my ankle.”
“I think Dr. Hansen is coming in a couple days, so tomorrow or the day after? Can I get you anything else son? I have to work this morning, but your mom will be around, as will Addison. I left the walkie talkie in the bedroom in case you needed your mom,” Dad explained as he sat for a few more minutes.
“I think I’ll be okay Dad. I can feel the meds starting to work already, so I’m going to try to go back to sleep. I suppose I’m used to getting up for work in the morning, probably why I woke up. Thanks for your help. Be safe at work today.”
“I always am. My job is to keep myself, my fellow guards, and all of you safe. I didn’t do a very good job of that yesterday. I wish your attack had been closer to the fence. It was just too far out for anyone to see or hear it. I’m sorry Al.” Dad looked down at his feet with what seemed like a look of despair.
“This is not your fault Dad. I’ve been going on that run several times a week for the last 6 months. None of us could have known this would happen.” I squeeze his arm before continuing, “have you heard how the she-wolf that saved me is doing?”
“No, but I’ll ask today and let you know tonight. Get some rest.” Those were his parting words and Dad left to prepare for work.
I felt the medication making me drowsy and a little woozy, but my mind drifted to the events of yesterday and the amazing she-wolf. I had to remember to ask Dad about if she was really a wolf or if two humans had fought and I imagined them as wolves. It just doesn’t make sense!
My mind flashed to the naked woman with the black hair, high cheekbones, pink, pouty lips, and torn abdomen. She laid before me as I applied pressure to her wounds and tried to not notice her nakedness. My body began to react all on its own, as I remembered her pink toenails, long legs, the dark curly hair I tried not to notice between her legs, and her perky breasts, I didn't even know her name. I intend to find out though. Even Susan wasn’t as beautiful as the woman I delivered first aid to. I drifted off to sleep and continued thinking of the intriguing woman or wolf in my dreams.
