Minutes later, Mindy burst into laughter. "You can't hurt me anymore, Clarence. You are a funny man and I love you."
Silence in the grocery store. Mindy swallowed. Said too much again.
Clarence's eyes bugged out. He coughed, leaning on the counter.
Mindy giggled. "I love you, Clarence. You are like my Grandpa. Mean and wild."
Clarence threw the money down, picked up his candy bar and walked out.
A lady paid for milk and Mindy gave her change back. John bagged it and walked to the door.
Clarence slipped back in and waited in the corner, sidestepping away from John.
John pushed the door open. "You come back to insult Mindy again? You need another candy bar to push in her face?"
Clarence didn't say a word, but waited inside the door.
The woman followed John outside.
