Chapter 4

I crashed at a hotel for the night. The images kept flashing through my head: Bella throwing herself into Arthur's arms, Arthur's hand firmly pressed against her waist. The scene replayed over and over on a loop. I didn't sleep a wink. The next day, I didn't drag myself home until noon. As I pushed open the door, the smell of food hit me. I froze. Against my better judgment, my heart gave a little flutter—'Had Arthur cooked a meal to apologize?' I walked into the living room. The table was set with a home-cooked meal. Arthur was sitting next to Bella, serving her food. She was wearing a silky, spaghetti-strap nightgown—a limited-edition Victoria's Secret piece. It was mine. It had been a birthday gift my best friend brought back from abroad. I had kept it hanging in my closet with the price tag still on, never able to bring myself to wear it. Yet, here she was, wearing it as if it were her own. Bella saw me and immediately stood up, forcing a nervous, sweet smile. "You're Summer, right? Sorry about yesterday. I had too much to drink. Please don't be mad." I pointed at the nightgown. "That nightie was a gift from my best friend. I've never even worn it." Bella's expression flickered, and she instinctively pulled the collar tighter. Arthur jumped in immediately. "Bella's clothes were being washed, so I grabbed one from your closet. I didn't know…" "Didn't know what? That it was mine?" "Summer, it's just a piece of clothing." "Take it off," I said, looking directly at Bella. Bella bit her lip and forced out a smile. "Um… name your price, and I'll buy it, okay? I didn't know it was from your best friend. Arthur didn't tell me when he handed it to me…" "I said, it was a gift from my best friend," I interrupted. "It's not about the money." Arthur stood up, his voice rising in volume. "Summer, that's enough! You're making a scene over a piece of clothing!" I looked at Arthur. I didn't say a word. I just stared at him. One second, two seconds, three seconds. Arthur grew uncomfortable under my gaze and looked away. I let out a deep breath. "Arthur, let's break up." My voice was calm. "Please move out." The living room fell into a dead silence.
