CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6 LAURA I had s*x with K. Before you judge me, I know. I know it’s stupid. I know it’s dangerous. I know I’m technically committing treason against the Alpha King by sleeping with another man. But everything happened so fast.Let me back up. Sandra’s email that morning: Charity Gala - The Plaza, 7pm. Red dress delivered. DO NOT BE LATE. The red dress was hanging in my closet when I woke up. Silk. Floor-length. I put it on. Did my makeup. Looked at myself in the mirror. Laura Luna Blackthorne. Perfect wife of the Alpha King. Kyle was waiting in the car like everything was normal. “Sure.” The Plaza was exactly what you’d expect. Gold everywhere. Rich wolves in designer gowns. Kyle’s hand on my lower back as we walked in. Warm. Possessive. For show. We made our rounds. Kyle introducing me to important people whose names I immediately forgot. Me smiling. Existing. Then we stopped at a woman standing alone near the windows. She was maybe seventy. Elegant. Expensive clothes. But there was something about her face—sharp features, ice-blue eyes. She looked like Kyle. “Mother,” Kyle said. His voice was different. Careful. Oh s**t. This was Diana Blackthorne, Kyle’s mother. She turned. Looked at me. Smiled. It didn’t reach her eyes. “So this is the new wife,” she said. Not daughter-in-law. Not Laura. The new wife. “Laura,” Kyle said. “This is my mother, Diana.” “Hello ma,” I greeted. Diana stepped forward. Pulled me into a hug before I could react. Then she whispered in my ear, so quiet Kyle couldn’t hear. “You think you can save him.” I went completely still. She pulled back. Smiled at me. That empty smile. “Lovely to meet you, dear,” she said at normal volume. I tried to step back, but my heel caught on something. The edge of my dress maybe. I don’t know.. I fell down, really hard, right there in front of everyone. My hands hit the floor. Pain shot through my wrists. I looked up, tears gathering in my face. Kyle was still standing there. Looking at me. He didn’t move. Didn’t reach down to help me. Just stood there with that blank expression while his mother watched and I was on the ground in front of hundreds of pack members. Someone else helped me up. Some older man whose name I didn’t know. “Are you alright?” he asked. I’m fine,” I said. Kyle had already turned away. Talking to someone else. Like I hadn’t just fallen. Like I didn’t exist. Diana was gone too. Disappeared into the crowd. I stood there while people stared and whispered. “Did you see—” “He didn’t even help her—” “Poor thing—” “He clearly hates her—” A photographer had caught it. I saw the flash. Saw him lower his camera and check the shot. Perfect. A photo of the Alpha King’s Luna on the ground while he ignored her. That would be in the pack news tomorrow. I walked to the bathroom fast, embarrassed, before anyone could see my face. Locked myself in a stall. Sat on the closed toilet lid. Put my head in my hands. I cried because I honestly didn’t have any idea what I’d gotten myself into. I sat there for maybe five minutes. Then I heard a knock on the bathroom door. Not the stall. The main door.I froze. “Laura?” A voice. Male. Muffled through the door.Kyle?I wiped my face. Stood up. Unlocked the stall. Walked to the main door. Opened it. Not Kyle. It was K. Standing there in a tux. Silver mask on. Those gold eyes looking at me. “What are you—” Before I could finish a statement, he kissed me. Walked me backwards into the bathroom. Locked the door behind him. His hands in my hair. My back against the wall. “I saw everything,” K said against my mouth. “I saw him leave you there.” “How are you—” Doesn’t matter.” He kissed my neck. My jaw. “Are you hurt?” “I’m fine—” “You’re not fine.” His hands moved down. To my waist. To my hips. One hand slid up my thigh under the dress. I should’ve said this was crazy. We were at a gala. Anyone could walk by. Kyle could find us. I didn’t stop him. His fingers found the edge of my underwear. Slipped underneath.I made a sound I’d never made before. “K—”Tell me to stop,” he said. “Tell me and I will.”I didn’t tell him to stop.He kissed my neck passionately. Dipping his hands into my dress, caressing my n*****s, his fingers dragged down to my c******s. He rubbed it until I could feel the wetness. He turned me around. Bent me forward over the sink. I could see myself in the mirror. Red dress hiked up. Hair messy. Eyes wild.I heard him unzip. Felt him line himself up. “Have you done this before?” he asked. “No.” He paused. “Don’t stop,” I said. He pushed in. I cried out. It hurt. God, it hurt. But also it felt like everything I needed. He moved slow at first, giving me time to adjust. His hand came around to cover my mouth when I got too loud.”Quiet,” he whispered against my ear. “Unless you want them to hear.”I bit down on his palm to keep quiet. He moved faster. Deeper. One hand on my hip holding me steady. The other still covering my mouth.I came so hard I saw stars. He followed right after, his whole body going tense against mine. We stayed like that for a second, both breathing hard. Then he pulled out. Fixed his clothes. I turned around. Leaned against the sink because my legs weren’t working. “Feel better?” he asked. I laughed. Couldn’t help it. “You’re asking me that now?” “Yes.” “Yeah,” I said. “I feel better.” He kissed me. Soft this time. Gentle.I have to go,” he said. “Before someone notices.”How are you even here?” “I told you. I’ll always find you.” He unlocked the door. Looked both ways down the hall. Then he was gone.I stood there. What the f**k just happened? I looked in the mirror. My hair was a mess. My makeup was smudged. My dress was wrinkled. I fixed what I could. Smoothed down the dress. Wiped under my eyes. Put my hair back up. Checked the mirror again. Better. Not perfect, but better.I walked out. Headed back to the hall.Kyle was standing in the hallway. Waiting. “Where were you?” he asked. “Bathroom.” “For twenty minutes?” I looked at him. “Don’t,” I said. “Don’t you dare act like you care.”I walked past him.He grabbed my arm. “What did my mother say to you?”I yanked my arm free. “Ask her yourself.” I went back into the hall. Found a spot near the bar. Ordered water. My hands were shaking. I remembered what Diana said. “You think you can save him.”What did Diana mean? Save him from what? And why did I suddenly feel like I was in the middle of something way bigger than a forced marriage? I looked across the room. Kyle was talking to someone. Perfectly composed Alpha King. Did he need saving? From what? Or was Diana just messing with me? I touched my right hand and smiled. I could still feel K’s touch. I’d just had s*x with my mate in a bathroom and I enjoyed every bit of it.I should’ve felt guilty.I didn’t.I felt alive for the first time in weeks. My phone buzzed. K: You are so sexy and sweet Me: You’re insane K: Probably K: Worth it though I put my phone away. Drank my water.I didn’t want to save Kyle. I’d rather die than save that cold, cruel bastard who left me on the ground while people stared. But something told me I didn’t have a choice. There is more to this.I could feel it. Kyle has secrets I didn’t understand yet. I just had to figure out what that is before it killed me.
