On the screen, Violet sat in the middle of the large hotel bed, her hair falling over her shoulders, her eyes red‑rimmed. She looked utterly pitiful and vulnerable.
She spoke softly into the camera, her tone timid and innocent. "Nova, please don't blame me. I really had no idea he was insisting on divorcing you because of me. I never had the slightest intention of coming between you."
I was about to confront her when, out of the corner of my eye, I suddenly caught sight of my husband on the other side of the bed.
The call woke Rowan. He opened his eyes, glanced over, and immediately rolled over and sat up.
He snatched the phone from Violet's hand and coldly snapped at me through the screen.
"Will you ever stop? Didn't I already tell you not to give Violet a hard time? Can't you understand a word I'm saying? Also, let me tell you, I'm divorcing you no matter what. If you keep dragging this out, I'll make sure you live to regret it."
Then, right in front of me, he tugged the strap that had slipped off Violet's shoulder back up.
The gesture was intimate and natural, without the slightest hesitation.
Violet snatched the phone back, putting on a timid act of defending me.
"Nova, don't take it to heart. Rowan didn't mean to be harsh with you. He was just in a bad mood that day. Don't misunderstand him."
After saying that, she turned and gently patted Rowan's chest, her tone carrying just the right note of affectionate reproach. "Rowan, don't be so harsh with Nova. If you do this again, I'll really get angry. "
Rowan reached out and ruffled her hair, his gaze tender.
"Given how she just made things difficult for you, only someone as kind as you would still be willing to speak up for her."
Before the video call ended, soft, ragged breaths were clearly audible through the speaker, accompanied by the faint sound of the bed shifting.
