When I reached my daughter's hospital room and saw how frail she looked, I was overwhelmed with regret. I shouldn't have been so naive as to believe Rowan would take good care of our daughter. Before long, there was a knock on the door. Rowan walked in with Violet. Not wanting to disturb my daughter, I coldly told them to step outside. Rowan looked guilty and asked, "How is Ruby? I never expected something like this to happen." I didn't want to talk to them. Violet showed no guilt whatsoever. Instead, she played the victim and blamed me, speaking in a tone that was both aggrieved and self‑righteous, "Nova, I didn't expect this either.
