A few weeks later, the bookstore still stood, but the fight was far from over. Amid the chaos of rallying the town, I found myself facing an entirely different kind of change—one I hadn’t seen coming. It started with small things: a wave of exhaustion that no amount of sleep could fix, a heightened sense of smell that made the coffee shop’s usual cinnamon blend overwhelming, and an unshakable feeling that something fundamental was different. I chalked it up to stress until the nausea hit. That was the moment I knew I needed answers. The test sat on the bathroom counter, its tiny screen flashing a result that would forever alter my life: Pregnant. I sat down on the edge of the tub, the weight of the news settling over me. My first thought was of Max. How would he react? Would he be thrilled, terrified, or both? A part of me was scared to tell him, not because I doubted his love but because I worried about the added stress during an already tumultuous time. When I finally worked up the courage, it was late evening. Max was in the back room of the bookstore, sorting through boxes of donations from the community—a gesture of support that had brought us to tears more than once. I stood in the doorway, watching him work, and my heart swelled with a mixture of love and anxiety. “Hey,” I said softly, stepping into the room. He looked up, his face lighting up when he saw me. “Hey yourself. What’s up?” I hesitated, fidgeting with the hem of my sweater. “Can we talk? It’s important.” Concern flickered across his features as he set down the box he was holding. “Of course. What’s going on?” I took a deep breath, the words catching in my throat before I finally managed to say them. “I… I’m pregnant.” For a moment, the room was silent, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, a grin spread across his face, and he stepped forward, pulling me into a tight hug. “You’re serious?” he asked, his voice thick with emotion. I nodded, tears welling up in my eyes. “Yeah. I just found out.” He pulled back slightly, his hands resting on my shoulders as he looked at me. “This is amazing,” he said, his voice trembling. “Terrifying, but amazing. Are you okay? How do you feel?” “Overwhelmed,” I admitted. “But happy. Scared, but happy.” He nodded, his own eyes glistening. “We’ll figure it out. Just like we’re figuring out the bookstore. One step at a time.” In that moment, I realized how much I trusted him, how much I believed in us. Together, we could face anything—whether it was saving the bookstore or becoming parents. The road ahead was uncertain, but for the first time in weeks, I felt a deep, unshakable sense of hope.
