Maya's POV:
I was really exhausted and wished the butler wouldn't come and pick me up today because I had just finished my exams and really wanted to rest.
When he called me this morning, I was on the verge of yelling at him to postpone it, but I knew that he had no say, so I quietly agreed. After several attempts to open the door, I ran towards the toilet and poured out the contents in my stomach.
I can hardly eat these days, and today I was finally able to down a whole burrito…well, what happened to it is quite obvious.
I hated being sick, especially when I was at home, because my mother would make me go through several check-ups that involved syringes, my biggest enemy.
I managed to pick my phone from my bag before I sat my ass on the bathroom floor because I was too tired to move. I just got a message from Cheryl about how tough her exam was, and it was at that moment a notification from my period app came in.
My face suddenly became white when I realised that my period was three days late. When I saw it the first day, I had ignored it because it happened at times.
I dropped my phone and held my mouth with shaky hands while trying to control the way I was breathing. I looked around and let out a sound that I couldn't describe as I rocked my body.
I picked up my phone and searched for my symptoms - nausea, dizziness, late period - and let out a sigh of relief when I read about several illnesses that had similar symptoms.
I had nothing to worry about since it could be stress or PCOS or gastritis and the likes…right? I felt my hand go clammy as I continued to go through different illnesses while ignoring the one that was at the back of my mind.
One foolish night stand where I didn't use any protection couldn't make me pregnant, right? I've heard that humans and werewolves aren't compatible because of the low birth rate, so I was definitely safe.
I stood up from the floor and opened the bathroom cabinet to pick up the bottle of Advil when something caught my eyes - pregnancy test stripes -
My roommate is a wild one, so it wasn't a surprise that she had so many. I placed my hand on one stripe before I realised what I was doing.
I quickly drew my hand back and took a step back. I knew I wasn't pregnant but the fact that I wanted to try it out was scaring me.
“Maya, you aren't pregnant, so there's nothing to be scared of,” I said to myself even though a voice in my head was moving me.
With a deep sigh, I picked up four strips and tried every single one of them before patiently sitting on the toilet seat while waiting for the result.
Waiting for the result had to be the worst moment of my life because my heart was so close to going on a vacation. The instructed time was soon up, so I picked up all four at the same time with my eyes closed.
Letting out a heave, I opened my eyes, and it was at the same time that my heart stopped because it was…positive.
No, something had to be wrong somewhere, even though everything was positive so I stood up to grab another test stripe.
“Maya,” I heard my father's voice call me but concluded I was hallucinating and the test results were proof.
“Mi niña.”
No, I wasn't hallucinating because it was only my father that would call me that. I walked out of the room and carried my luggage that I managed to pack yesterday.
“How was your exam?” My father asked me, but I didn't have it in me to reply.
I didn't even have it in me to reprimand him for acting like my mother's butler when he collected my luggage and opened the car's door for me.
My vision became blurry, and it wasn't from how fast my father was driving but because my eyes were filled with tears. One reckless night was what it took for me to ruin my life so much while my ex was probably enjoying his time with his new girlfriend.
I wish I could go back in time and just stay in my room instead of sleeping with not even a human but a werewolf.
Oh God! I'd crossed a line that I shouldn't have, and I couldn't undo my big mistake.
“We are here,” my father announced as he drove into the compound.
I felt my chest tighten as I imagined the expression my mother would have if I told her. Taking a gulp of nothing, I stepped out of the car and walked into the house that was going to spell out my doom soon.
“Maya, my darling,” my mother said with an unusual cheery voice that she only used whenever we had a visitor.
“Mother,” I choked out before looking away, only to see my sister in the sitting room.
That was quite strange, but the strangeness didn't beat my fiancé, who was whispering to her. I couldn't care less about whatever my family was planning because I had a more serious issue at hand.
It was a surprise that my fiancé was sitting there even after I made an arrow fly just a bit past his head.
“Sit down my love,” my mother said before she placed her hand on my shoulder.
The touch burned me, but I knew it was the guilt I was feeling. This family saw me as the perfect and golden child and here I was wondering what I could do to clean up the mess I made.
“So we were discussing your engagement day and we are thinking of doing your wedding on the same day,” my mother announced with a bright smile.
I didn't have it in me to even oppose it, but it seemed like my sister's tight expression did the job for me, not like my mother cared about her opinion.
“Selene, do you think your sister is going to look pretty in a white wedding dress or blue?” My mother asked my sister who didn't seem like she wanted to be here.
This conversation was suffocating in a way that made me want to do nothing more than to yell.
“I think blue is going to be nice,” my fiancé responded with a shy and innocent smile.
That was what it took for me to figure out why I was feeling suffocated by this conversation. Guilt. I was feeling too guilty to listen to these people play a wedding that wasn't going to take place.
“That's my favourite colour,” my mother lied through her teeth.
We both had the same colour and that was red, but I couldn't call her out on it since I was sitting here and deceiving everyone.
“That's really nice,” my fiancé said with a smile that was almost brighter than my mother's.
I couldn't take it anymore and the way my heart was thumping fast was proof of that. The smiles on their faces made me want to pull out every single strand of my hair.
“I'm pregnant,” I muttered, but it seemed like no one heard me except my sister who narrowed her eyes.
“I'm pregnant,” I yelled loud enough for everyone to hear, and just like I expected…silence.
My fiancé's hand froze mid-air and my mother's smile went very still as the grandfather clock across the hallway ticked once.
