"So he was right," Clara muttered, "He was right that I took the place of his fiancée." She didn't say anything else to the stranger she had just married. She was ashamed and helpless.
Clara was a very strong woman who could hardly be broken, even in the most critical condition, but this hit her really deep and broke her.
The man she had just gotten married to, with whom she had been arguing, simply smiled. He knew she had found out the hard truth.
"I see you are quiet, you must have found out the truth" He mocked.
Clara didn't say anything else. Her face was covered in shame, she stayed quiet all through the journey to Henry's house, unsure of what to expect. On the other hand, she thought of how she would pay her mom's debt, now that she was obviously married to a guy who was obviously broke.
The couple arrived at the massive, yet cozy and simple, house. He moved quickly, but she didn't follow him. She stayed in the car.
Henry noticed she was not following him and went back to the car.
"I don't have time for this drama, you'd better come out now, or I'll drag you out," Henry spat.
Clara stayed quiet, she didn't say anything else.
"Well, suit yourself. Come inside when you are ready" Henry said again and stormed inside the mini mansion.
"How did I, how did I find myself in such a situation? I don't even know how to get my mum's company back from that Clarence." Clara broke down, she broke down in tears that she had been trying to control, that had been welling up inside of her. She cried so much that she fell asleep.
***********
"Aww, my head aches," Clara said as she managed to open her aching eyes. She looked at her wristwatch, and it was 7pm. She gently opened the door and came out. Then she stepped inside the mini mansion.
"Hi, I am Amos the Chef, you are welcome. I must say you are very beautiful" he teased her.
"Thank you" she managed a smile.
"Would yoú like something to eat" Mr
Amos asked.
"Sure, I would love to. What do you have?" she asked.
"I would make whatever you want" Mr. Amos uttered.
Clara told him that she would eat whatever he made. He went to the kitchen, and a few minutes later, he served her.
She ate to her fill and was ushered to her room upstairs.
She quickly had a bath, but there was a problem, she noticed her monthly flow had just started, she was also stranded and had nothing to wear. She hadn't brought any nightwear or even any clothes to change into.
Based on Clarence's instructions, Clara had come with nothing. He had told her not to, insisting he was capable of taking care of her needs as his new wife. Now, she was confused, pacing around the room, not knowing what to do.
"I can't sleep in this wedding dress and that stranger... I don't even know his name, I am definitely in a huge mess right now. Arrrrgh" she yelled, hitting the wall.
Clara finally sat one-sided on the sofa so as not to stain it She was still confused and looking through the glass window. It was dark, and she couldn't leave or call anyone since she didn't know the area, and her credit card wasn't with her. She had misplaced it earlier and planned to get another.
She was still lost in thought when the door burst open.
"What do you want? What are you doing here? How dare you barge into my room without knocking?" Clara yelled, furious, standing up to confront Henry. She didn't trust him yet, as he was still a stranger to her.
"Hold it, I see you are ready to fight, but I am not here for any of that. I brought you this, figured you would need it." Henry dropped the leather bag he was holding beside her.
"I don't care, just leave," Clara yelled, kicking the bag aside and pretending she didn't want anything from him.
As he was leaving, Clara truly noticed how gorgeous her new husband was, but she was too angry to admit it.. Strands of his long black hair draped across his face, and his well-built body was evident beneath the night robe he was wearing.
It was as though he had read her mind and heard her unspoken call for help. He felt a connection to her, though he denied it.
The moment he left, Clara hurriedly went through the bag, taking out the items. At last, she found some sanitary pads and some nightwear.
Lying on the bed, she felt trapped. She felt she was going from one trouble to another. Clarence offered to give her money, but the accidental husband didn't look like he was going to offer her anything. She didn't know how she would save her mother in this situation. Damn.
***************
Henry lay on his bed. His mind raced through the events of the day. He noticed Clara was indeed beautiful, her dimples deepened when she spoke, and that even made her more beautiful. Her beauty was breathtaking indeed but no, she wasn't hís type. She was sassy and acted like someone without class.
Henry couldn't forget Lana. He didn't know why his fiancée hadn't shown up for their carefully planned wedding. Bút instead, a total stranger walked in. He remembered how happy they were at the beginning, how she couldn't do without hearing his voice everyday. He wondered what could have gone wrong. Tears welled up in his eyes as he thought about her.
Henry Smith was the first son of William Smith, a 70-year-old billionaire, and his younger brother, Andrew Smith, lived abroad.
Andrew Smith had traveled overseas for study, and afterwards, got a job. But it's been 4 years and his family has not seen him, he had refused to come back home, but he kept in touch with them.
As the first son, he was supposed to be the next Chairman of the Swans Oil and Gas. This was why he was under pressure to get married. This was a criterion for the board of directors to approve and accept him as the next chairman of the company.
Henry was initially reluctant to go through with the wedding, even when his best man and assistant, Jake, urged him to. It was his father's instruction to continue with the wedding vows so as not to embarrass the family.
"Your Dad just came in, and he asked me to inform you that the board has finally approved you as the new Chairman of Smiths Oil and Gas," Jake had said. "He also mentioned that you should go ahead with the wedding."
Henry looked across the hall and saw his father; his sad countenance said it all. His expression was stern and straight. But Henry was not moved by his father's facial expression, he knew his father as a hard man.
"Please tell my dad this is not my bride, and I cannot marry her, I don't know who this is," Henry whispered to Jake.
Henry felt a mixture of emotions. He had waited so long for this promotion and worked hard for it. He wouldn't miss it for anything in the world. But now, he was faced with a very difficult decision. "Marry the bride before him or lose his inheritance."
He nodded his head in acceptance and proceeded to say the wedding vows.
Lying in bed, Henry squeezed his pillow and managed a smile.
"I like her though. She seems very intriguing." He knew he couldn't let her go just yet; she was his ticket to actually becoming the chairman.
"But will Clara agree to be my wife for a year?" he wondered. "Will she even agree with the plan? I'll have to talk to her in the morning." Henry felt a headache coming on, so he decided to get some sleep.
