The days slowly inched along, there was the occasional sign from Ash that she was still in there, a twitch of fingers or a foot, a move of the head though that could have been gravity, as Loki pointed out, movement of her eyes under her eyelids, her mouth opening, her pulse rate speeding up or slowing down, she seemed to moan a little when one of the nurses, Micah didn't know who, moved her IV.

The days turned into a week, Micah had been told that Kit had woke up after 6 days, Micah didn't want anything to do with the wizard though. His father had been to see Micah after speaking with the wizard. Micah was not impressed to be told about his progress. “Kit is awake son. He needs to communicate with the college and potentially the palace to get us some answers about young Ashlyn. He said that your mate has exceptionally strong wards both physically and mentally, he thought that she would know subconsciously at least, how to drop her defences to let him in, but he underestimated her strength, he thinks this is the result of some kind of blow back, from my understanding, her different natures responded to him differently, so the healer in her tried to heal him while he was getting drained, and the defensive powers that are from the general magic user DNA and her record keeper line were keeping her walls up. He thinks she has some kind of magic splash back from power bouncing back to her, along with being slightly drained, he said that were she weaker she would be dead. He expects that she should wake in the next couple of days, and the fact that she has been moving is a really good sign.” 

Micah was listening in silence, his face stony throughout. “He shouldn’t have let it go this far… he could have killed my mate!” 

Rowan could see that Micah was fuming, he couldn't blame him really. “Micah, you have to stay calm, Ash will feel your distress. He made a mistake, and I’m sure he regrets that too. Kit seems to feel very bad about what has happened here” 

Micah made an effort to calm himself, holding onto Ash’s hand and using her scent to sooth Zander. 

After another half an hour or so, Rowan left, telling Micah to eat and shower, and get Mark or Loki to sit with Ash so that he could go for a run with Zander. He needed to look after himself so that he could look after Ash. Micah agreed with his father, knowing that if he didn't agree he would be in trouble. He might be an adult but his father wouldn't hesitate to set his mother or Mrs Black on him. 

He called both Loki and Mark, asking them to come and watch Ash. Once they arrived, he explained the plan, that he would shift and go for a run for a little bit, but he wouldn't be far, and then he would head back to the house to grab some more clothes and come back to shower. I’ll send our dirty stuff back with one of you, if thats ok?” 

They both nodded and Mark pulled out the book “take your time, I have the book I’ve been reading with Ash” he explained with a smile. Loki settled himself on the sofa as Mark took the chair that Micah vacated. 

For the next hour, Mark read from the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. He didn't know how to just talk to Ash really but couldn't stand the silence of being around her like this. Loki quite enjoyed the story too so he didn't complain and listened along.

The day after Kit woke, Rowan came to visit Micah in Ash’s room again. This time he had Xavier and Kit with him. “Son, stay calm for Ash, you need to be involved in this meeting” Rowan warned Micah, it was obvious to everyone that he wanted to tear Kit limb from limb and Zander was struggling for control. Eventually Micah nodded, signalling that he had Zander under control. Rowan indicated that Kit should follow him. Once everyone had taken a seat, they all turned to Kit.

Kit cleared his throat nervously, rubbing his hands on his jeans as he shifted under the gaze of everyone’s eyes. “Urm… well… I’ve spoken to my superior…. He thinks we should take some blood samples from Ashlyn, to send to the palace for DNA…. Because… well her mental shields are the strongest I have ever encountered in someone who doesn’t know what they are. Whoever made the preliminary assessment over the phone was right that Ashlyn is a record keeper, but I also detect healing powers and I suspect she has access to more offensive and defensive powers than is typical…. Well I’m not sure how to say this… but I think Ashlyn is a princess… that is to say, the royals in our world can use pretty much any power a typical magic user can. I suspect that Ashlyn will be able to cast and ward, use magic on demand, she will have mental powers which have already manifested, she will be able to read and record in your history books. We will have a lot to teach young Ashlyn and she may have more family out there. But her DNA will give us answers that I couldn’t but that I need to begin her training.”

A stunned silence answered Kit’s announcement. Micahs hand tightening on the unconscious Ash’s. it was Rowan who agreed to the plan and sent Xavier to ask the doctor to arrange for the tests to be taken and sent to the college and the palace. Kit went too to explain what was needed and how to send them. Once they were alone, Micah and Rowan just looked down at Ash, but they didn't know what to say.

Kit and Xavier came back about 20 mins later. The doctor in tow. Taking the blood was simple, but getting it to the right place in the college and the palace to get the results they needed as soon as possible was more complicated. Kit was going to arrange to have portals opened to get the blood to where it needed to be. The whole thing was done in 5 minutes and the doctor left with Kit again. 

“Hey man, I can watch her if you need to run or eat or shower or anything” Xavier offered. 

Micah shook his head “I’m good right now, but thanks man… Mark has taken to coming to read to her in an evening, I might go out then” Micah replied with a smile before turning to his dad “if shes a princess, are they going to try and take her away?” He asked. His face pale. He didn't think he could stand to be separated from her for any length of time. He wouldn't survive if they took her away. 

“I don't know son, we can appeal to the council if its not what Ash wants because she is safe here and you are her mate. But from what I know of the royal family, they don't hold their members captive or force them to be away from their partners un necessarily. They allow their women a say in the decisions made about them, so if this is where Ash wants to be and we don't stop her seeing them or fulfilling any function she has for them then I see no reason for them to take her away.”
